Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

The following Sunday, I did the unthinkable: I took Daniel back to my parents' house.

I had spent the entire week preparing him. "Daniel, we are going to play a game," I had told him, kneeling by his bed. "We are going to pretend everything is perfectly fine. If Marcos comes near you, you walk away and come straight to me. You don't have to speak to him, and you don't have to play with him. But I need you to be my bravest little astronaut. Can you do that?"

"Are we spying, Mom?" he asked, his eyes shining with a mixture of fear and excitement.

"Exactly. We are gathering data. And once we have enough, we win."

When we arrived, the atmosphere was thick with patronizing pity. My mother kissed my cheek, her eyes scanning me for any sign of resentment. Finding none, she patted Daniel’s head. "Look at you, all better! See? Boys are tough. Marcos has a soccer game today, he's so sorry he can't play, but he left you some of his old coloring books."

It was an insult wrapped in a peace offering. Marcos, of course, was not sorry. He was currently in the living room, playing video games, completely ignoring Daniel’s presence. Vanessa was lounging on the patio, sipping white wine, looking like a queen who had successfully defended her castle.

"Glad you stopped being dramatic, Clara," Vanessa said as I sat down next to her. "Honestly, with the way you were screaming, anyone would have thought Marcos used a baseball bat. He’s twelve. He doesn't know his own strength."

"Of course," I said, forcing my voice to sound submissive, even slightly ashamed. "I was just stressed with work. You know how it is."

"Oh, I do," Vanessa sighed, swirling her wine. "Dad’s business has been a nightmare lately. All these new regulations. Honestly, I don't know how we’d survive without our offshore consultants."

My ears perked up. Offshore consultants.

"Really?" I asked, keeping my tone casually interested. "I thought Dad was still sourcing everything locally."

"Well, officially, yes," Vanessa said, clearly wanting to brag about her business acumen. "But there are ways around everything. Dad found this shell company in Panama. We route the invoices through them, inflate the costs, and boom—our taxable income practically disappears. Dad bought a new boat last month with the savings."

"Wow, Vanessa. You really are a genius," I said, offering her a look of pure admiration. "I struggle just doing basic payroll for my clients."

"Well, some of us have natural business instincts," she smirked, taking a long sip.

While she basked in her self-proclaimed glory, I reached into my purse and subtly pressed the stop button on my phone’s voice recorder. I had just captured a verbal confession of tax fraud and money laundering.

Later that afternoon, while my father was showing my husband—who was fully in on my plan—his new golf clubs in the garage, I slipped into my father’s home office. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my hands were steady. I inserted a encrypted USB drive into his desktop computer.

Within four minutes, my pre-programmed software copied his entire email archive, financial ledgers, and the hidden folder labeled "Consulting_International."

As the progress bar hit 100%, I heard footsteps approaching the door. I pulled the USB out, slipped it into my bra, and sat down in his leather chair just as my father walked in.

"What are you doing in here?" he asked, his brow furrowing.

"Just looking for a pen, Dad," I said, holding up a cheap ballpoint from his desk. "And... I wanted to say thank you. For helping me see that I was overreacting about Daniel. I don't want any bad blood between us."

My father’s expression softened into one of smug satisfaction. "Good girl, Clara. Family is everything. You remember that."

"I will, Dad," I said. "I'll never forget it."
