Chapter 6 - The Feast of Reckoning

The night of the dinner, my apartment was pristine. The scent of roasted garlic and rosemary filled the air. I had prepared a lavish three-course meal.
My parents arrived first, my father carrying a bottle of cheap wine, my mother beaming as if she had personally orchestrated this reconciliation. Vanessa and her husband arrived shortly after, with Marcos lagging behind, his eyes glued to his phone.
Daniel was in his room. I had told him to stay there, play his video games, and wait for my signal.
"Where’s the little survivor?" my father joked, clapping me on the shoulder. "Still hiding?"
"He's just resting, Dad," I said, offering a tight smile. "Sit down. Let's eat."
Throughout dinner, the conversation was dominated by my family’s bragging. Vanessa talked about her upcoming trip to Maui. My father boasted about a new commercial contract he was about to sign. My mother kept chiming in about how "blessed" they all were.
"It’s just amazing what happens when you don't let drama ruin your life," my mother said, looking pointedly at me. "Right, Clara?"
"Absolutely, Mom," I said, standing up to clear the plates. "In fact, I have a special dessert prepared. But before I bring it out, I have a few gifts for everyone."
"Gifts? For what?" Vanessa laughed. "It’s not anyone's birthday."
"Just a token of my appreciation," I said.
I walked into my study and retrieved five thick, bound folders. I walked back into the dining room and placed one in front of my father, one in front of Vanessa, one in front of my mother, and kept one for myself.
"What is this?" my father asked, frowning as he looked at the heavy paper.
"Open it," I said, my voice dropping all pretense of warmth. It was cold, flat, and commanding.
My father opened the folder. The first page was a copy of the double-entry ledger of his business. The second page was a detailed list of his offshore accounts in Panama, complete with account numbers and balances.
The color drained from his face so fast I thought he might faint. He looked up at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Clara... what is this? Where did you get this?"
"Keep reading, Dad," I said.
Vanessa snatched her folder open. Her eyes widened as she saw the bank statements showing her personal embezzlement of over $450,000 from our father’s company, alongside the records of how she had systematically depleted our mother’s retirement fund to cover her own debts.
"This is a lie!" Vanessa screamed, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "This is fabricated! You crazy b***h, what are you doing?"
"Vanessa, what are you talking about?" my mother asked, confused and frightened. She opened her folder. The first page was a summary of her "retirement bond," showing a balance of exactly $14.12. The next pages were copies of Vanessa’s signatures, transferring the money into her personal accounts.
"No..." my mother whispered, her hands trembling. "Vanessa? What is this? Where is my money?"
"Mom, don't listen to her! She’s trying to tear us apart because she’s jealous!" Vanessa shrieked, but her voice lacked conviction. She was terrified.
"And finally," I said, turning to Marcos, who was looking up from his phone, suddenly aware that something was very wrong. "We have the medical reports, the psychological evaluations of Daniel, and the draft of the police report for child abuse and assault."

"Clara, stop this!" my father roared, slamming his fist on the table. "You will destroy this family!"
"You destroyed this family the moment you let a twelve-year-old break my son's ribs and smiled about it," I said, pointing a finger at Vanessa. "And you, Dad, destroyed it when you decided that money was more important than your grandson’s life."
