Chapter 7 - The Final Protocol

Five minutes.
That was all the time I had before the machine completed its data transfer and permanently overwrote Lily’s consciousness with whatever cold, algorithmic intelligence powered the subterranean node.
I scrambled to my feet, ignoring the searing pain in my arms and the pounding ache in my head. I couldn't fight the entity with physical force; it was bound to the hardware infrastructure embedded deep within the foundation walls. To save Lily, I had to sever the connection at its source.
I swept my flashlight beam across the mass of cables and glowing blue circuitry lining the brick wall.
Most of them were encased in thick, reinforced conduits, but near the base of the main terminal box—a massive, frost-covered metallic casing bearing a faded corporate logo I couldn't quite read—a thick bundle of fiber-optic cables ran exposed across the concrete floor.
If I could sever those main feed lines, the node would lose power. The transfer protocol would fail.
"Lily, stay right there!" I yelled over the deafening hum of the machinery.
She didn't respond. She stood frozen at the edge of the tunnel, her feet hovering an inch above the dirt floor, suspended in a localized anti-gravity field generated by the entity.
I lunged toward the tool bench near the basement stairs, my fingers frantically searching through a cluttered drawer of old hardware. Screwdrivers, pliers, rusted wrenches—none of them would cut through reinforced fiber-optic cable.
Then my hand brushed against a heavy-duty pair of insulated wire cutters with reinforced steel jaws.
I grabbed them, spinning around just as the entity raised both of its shadowy arms, sending a wave of freezing air sweeping across the basement. The temperature plummeted below freezing instantly; my breath plumed into thick white clouds in the dim light.
T-minus two minutes.
The digital countdown flashed in red numbers across the surface of the metallic terminal box, visible through the flickering glow of the quantum node.
I sprinted toward the main cable bundle, dropped to my knees, and positioned the steel jaws of the cutters around the thickest cable. The outer casing was rigid, armored with braided steel mesh.
I squeezed down with every ounce of strength I had in my body.
The steel jaws bit into the casing, but the cable resisted, sparking brilliantly with a blinding flash of white light that scorched my knuckles.
"Come on! Break!" I sobbed, throwing my entire body weight onto the handles.
With a sharp, metallic snap, the outer mesh gave way, and the internal core severed completely.
A violent shockwave of compressed energy erupted from the severed cable, throwing me backward across the room. The basement plunged into total, pitch-black silence.

The humming stopped. The glowing blue code vanished from the walls.
And the heavy, oppressive weight that had filled the air evaporated instantly, replaced by the warm, damp scent of ordinary earth.
