Chapter 10 - A New Beginning
Six months later, summer had arrived in full swing, turning the neighborhood into a vibrant tapestry of green trees, blooming flowers, and the joyful shouts of children playing outside.
It was a warm Saturday evening, and the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and gold.
I stood at the kitchen sink, washing the dinner dishes while listening to the cheerful sound of Daniel and Lily laughing together in the backyard. They were setting up a tent on the lawn for a special family campout under the stars—an idea Lily had insisted on for weeks.
"Mom! Come on out! We're almost done!" Lily's voice rang out across the yard, bubbling with excitement.
"Coming, sweetie!" I called back, drying my hands on a kitchen towel and smiling as I looked out the window.
The yard looked peaceful, bathed in the soft glow of string lights we had hung along the fence. There were no shadows, no hidden anomalies, no cold drafts from beneath the earth. Just a normal, happy family enjoying a quiet summer evening together.
As I stepped out through the back door and walked across the lush green grass toward the tent, Lily ran up to me, throwing her arms around my waist and looking up with bright, sparkling eyes.
"Are you ready for the best campout ever, Mom?" she asked, her smile radiant.
I knelt down, wrapping my arms around her and resting my chin gently on her shoulder, feeling the warm, steady beat of her heart against mine.
"I am, sweetheart," I whispered softly, looking up at the vast, star-filled sky above us. "I am."
