Chapter 4 - The Digital Intrusion

The text message sat on my phone screen like a digital brand, glowing with an eerie, unyielding light.

CONTAINMENT_INTEGRITY = 94%.

What did that even mean? Was Lily some kind of experiment? Was our house bugged not just by a camera, but by something far more sinister?

I looked up from the screen, my gaze darting across the kitchen. Lily was still sitting at the table, her cereal bowl untouched, her small fingers idly tracing circles in the spilled milk.

"Lily, honey?" I called out, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound normal. "How are you feeling this morning?"

She didn't answer right away. She slowly raised her head, her eyes blinking sluggishly as if she were waking up from a deep, drugged sleep.

"It's still there, Mom," she whispered, her voice devoid of its usual childish inflection. It sounded flat, metallic, almost synthesized. "It's getting heavier."

"What's getting heavier, sweetie?" I asked, rushing to her side and kneeling down to take her small hands in mine. They were freezing cold—ice-cold, as if she had been holding blocks of snow.

"The weight," she replied simply, tilting her head at an unnatural angle. "It’s trying to switch places with me."

Before I could process the sheer horror of her words, my laptop screen across the room flashed violently. The security camera software, which I had left running on the desktop, suddenly maximized itself to full screen.

A new window had opened—a command prompt interface filled with cascading green text scrolling down a black background at breakneck speed.

I stood up abruptly, leaving Lily at the table, and hurried over to the desk.

The text was scrolling too fast to read, but at the very bottom of the terminal window, a flashing cursor blinked next to a stark prompt:

[REMOTE OVERRIDE ENGAGED. INITIATING DIAGNOSTIC SCAN OF LOCAL ENVIRONMENT.]

Panic surged through my veins. I slammed my hand down on the laptop's power button, holding it tight to force a hard shutdown.

The screen flickered, went black for a split second, and then—defying the physical laws of electronics—powered itself right back on. The fan whined loudly, spinning at maximum RPM, and the camera feed popped back open automatically.

The view of Lily’s bedroom had changed.

The normal visual feed was gone, replaced by a thermal infrared overlay.

On the screen, Lily’s body glowed in bright, warm oranges and yellows as she sat at the kitchen table. But in the corner of the monitor, focused entirely on the empty bedroom down the hall, something impossible was happening.

Beneath the bed frame, where physical inspection had revealed absolute emptiness just hours before, the thermal camera was reading a massive, concentrated patch of pure, absolute zero.

A pocket of freezing energy, shaped precisely like a human form, was huddled directly beneath the mattress.

And as I watched in frozen horror, the thermal signature began to crawl outward from under the bed frame, sliding silently across the hardwood floor toward the doorway.
