Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Code

Morning light brought little comfort, only a heavy, lingering dread that settled behind my ribs like lead.

Daniel had left for work early, dismissing my late-night panic as a vivid hallucination brought on by stress. But I knew what I had seen. I knew what I had felt. More importantly, I had the digital proof sitting on a server accessible through my phone application.

While Lily sat at the kitchen table eating her cereal, staring blankly into space with an exhaustion that didn't match a normal eight-year-old, I sat at the island with my laptop open.

I pulled up the security camera application and navigated to the historical event logs. I found the timestamp for 2:00 a.m. and hit play on the footage.

The video loaded instantly.

For the first forty-five seconds, everything was quiet. Lily slept. The room was still. Then, at exactly 2:01 a.m., the anomaly began.

I watched the screen intently, my fingers gripping the edge of the counter so hard my knuckles turned white. On the monitor, the mattress clearly shifted upward. Not because of a spring, and certainly not because of anything falling onto it. The fabric of the duvet rose from underneath, lifting precisely where Lily’s spine rested.

But as I watched it a second time, noticing a detail I had missed in the blind panic of the night, my breath caught.

The camera angle was high, looking down across the room from the corner near the bookshelf. It captured not just the bed, but a narrow strip of the hardwood floor beside it where a small area rug usually lay.

In the video, right at the exact moment the mattress pushed upward, a tiny, pixelated distortion flickered near the baseboard.

It was faint—so faint that anyone glancing casually at the screen would have written it off as a compression artifact or digital noise. But I zoomed in, cranking the resolution to its maximum limit, applying sharpening filters until the pixels bloomed.

The distortion didn't look like a glitch.

It looked like a signature. A faint, glowing sequence of hexadecimal code scrolling downward, reflecting off the polished wood for less than a second before vanishing back into the shadows.

Hex code? Why would a physical disturbance under a bed generate digital code?

Before I could process the terrifying absurdity of that thought, my phone pinged with an incoming text message from an unknown number.

I picked it up with trembling fingers and unlocked the screen.

There was only a single line of text:

[SYSTEM ALERT: SUBJECT LILY.CONTAINMENT_INTEGRITY = 94%. DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE HARDWARE.]

My blood ran instantly cold.

I stared at the screen, my mind racing through impossible possibilities. Someone was hacking my home security camera. Someone was watching us through the feed.

And they knew about Lily.
