Chapter 8 - Healing and New Beginnings

The look of absolute terror on Madeline's face was worth more than all the gold in the world. Her carefully constructed empire of lies, manipulation, and greed evaporated in a single second.

Charles stepped away from her, realizing he had been used as a pawn in a criminal game. "Aunt Madeline... is this true? You embezzled from the family?"

"Shut up, Charles!" she snapped, her voice cracking as her composure finally shattered. She looked at Brandon, her eyes wild with hatred and fear. "What do you want?"

"The name," Brandon demanded, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Give me the name of the man, and I will give you twenty-four hours to sign over all control of the estate, confess to the board, and leave the country before I hand these files over to the FBI. Save my son, and I will let you run away like the coward you are."

Madeline’s hands trembled. She realized she had lost everything. She grabbed a piece of paper from the table, wrote down a name and a phone number with a shaking hand, and threw it at Brandon’s feet.

"His name is Richard Hayes. He’s a retired pediatric surgeon. He lives in Atlanta," she whispered, her voice devoid of life. "Now get out of my sight."

Brandon picked up the paper. We didn't waste another second. We turned our backs on the grand manor, on the wealth that had brought nothing but misery, and we ran.

Brandon called the number while we were in the car rushing back to the hospital. When Richard Hayes answered, Brandon explained the situation with breathless honesty. On the other end of the line, there was a long, emotional silence.

"I always suspected," Richard's voice was warm, older, and filled with an immediate, deep emotion. "Madeline cut me off completely after that summer. I never knew for sure if you were mine, Brandon. I will be at Vanderbilt Medical Center in two hours. Tell the doctors I am coming, and I will give my son and my grandson whatever they need."

True to his word, Richard Hayes arrived at the hospital by late afternoon. He was a kind-looking man with silver hair and the same gentle, deep-set eyes as Brandon. There was no awkwardness, no hesitation. He walked straight to Brandon and embraced him in a tight, weeping hug that broke through thirty-four years of isolation.

Within an hour, Richard was hooked up to the blood donation machine. His plasma was processed and immediately administered to Luke.

The transformation was miraculous. By Tuesday morning, the color had completely returned to Luke’s cheeks. His heart rate normalized, his oxygen levels stabilized, and the pain in his chest completely disappeared. He woke up, looked around the room, and smiled when he saw Brandon and me sitting by his side, holding hands.

"Mommy? Daddy?" Luke whispered, rubbing his eyes. "I feel better now. Can we go home?"

"Soon, baby," I smiled, kissing his forehead, my heart overflowing with a joy so profound it washed away every ounce of pain from the past week. "Soon we're going home."
