Chapter 3 - Shadows of Suspicion and the Sealed Envelope

The next forty-eight hours were a living nightmare. Luke was moved to a private room in the pediatric ward for continuous observation. He was hooked up to an IV, his little body looking so small against the massive white hospital bed. Brandon stayed by his side, but a distance had grown between us—an invisible, agonizing wall built from the silence of things unsaid.

On Friday afternoon, while Luke was napping, Brandon’s phone rang. It was his aunt, Clara, the only member of the family who had ever shown us an ounce of kindness. Brandon answered it on speakerphone so I could hear.

"Brandon, thank goodness you answered," Clara said, her voice frantic. "Your mother is out of control. After you left, she called a family meeting. She’s telling everyone that Elena had an affair five years ago. She claims she has proof—medical records or something—showing that Luke isn't yours. She’s already talking to the family attorneys about rewriting the family trust to cut you and Luke out completely."

Brandon’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned purple. "She’s lying, Aunt Clara. Elena would never do that. Luke is my son."

"I want to believe that, Brandon, I really do," Clara sighed heavily. "But Madeline is so confident. She told the entire family that if you take a DNA test, it will prove her right. Everyone is talking. You need to fix this, Brandon. If the trust is rewritten, the company, the estate... everything your father left for you will go to your cousin Charles."

After the call ended, the silence in the room was deafening. I stood up from my chair and looked directly into my husband's eyes.

"Do you believe her?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mixture of anger and betrayal. "Do you honestly believe I could ever do that to you, Brandon?"

Brandon looked down, refusing to meet my gaze. "No, Elena. I don't want to believe it. But my mother... she doesn't make empty threats. She’s malicious, but she’s calculating. If she’s putting her entire reputation on the line in front of the family, she thinks she has something."

"The hospital asked for our DNA samples to diagnose Luke’s medical condition," I said, my voice hardening. "The results will be ready in a few days. That will give you your answer. But the fact that you even have to question it, Brandon... that hurts more than anything Madeline could ever say."

That evening, a courier arrived at the hospital room. He handed Brandon a heavy, cream-colored envelope bearing the crest of the family's legal firm. Inside was a formal notice from Madeline’s lawyers, stating that Brandon’s access to the family’s joint accounts had been temporarily frozen pending an investigation into "lineage verification" as required by the bylaws of the family trust.

We were being squeezed from all sides. Our son was sick, our financial stability was being threatened, and our marriage was hanging by a thread. I sat in the chair beside Luke’s bed, holding his small, warm hand, praying for a miracle, while Brandon sat on the small couch across the room, staring at the sealed envelope as if it contained our death warrant.
