Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Lab Results

On Monday morning, the air in the hospital room was thick with anticipation. Luke was feeling much better, his color had returned, and he was happily watching cartoons on the small television mounted to the wall, oblivious to the storm raging around him.

A sharp knock on the door broke the tension. Dr. Evans walked in, holding a thick manila folder. His expression was unreadable, a mixture of clinical focus and something that looked suspiciously like bewilderment.

"Good morning, Elena, Brandon," Dr. Evans said, closing the door firmly behind him. "The comprehensive genetic and metabolic reports are back. We have a clear picture of what triggered Luke’s episode, and I think we need to discuss the results privately."

Brandon stood up immediately, his posture rigid. "Is my son going to be okay, Doctor?"

"Physically, yes. Luke has a mild, highly manageable genetic condition known as G6PD deficiency, which affects his red blood cells under extreme stress or exposure to certain triggers. It’s completely treatable with proper diet and stress management. He will lead a long, healthy life."

A collective sigh of relief washed over me. I sunk back into my chair, thanking God. But Dr. Evans wasn't finished. He looked at the folder, then at Brandon, and finally at me.

"However, because we had to do a full comparative parental genetic analysis to identify the origin of this trait, the lab ran a standard paternity and maternity verification. I believe this is what you were waiting for."

Brandon stepped forward, his hand shaking slightly. "And?"

Dr. Evans pulled out a sheet of paper and handed it to Brandon. "The genetic markers are irrefutable. Luke is, without a shadow of a doubt, your biological son, Brandon. The probability of paternity is 99.99%."

I looked at Brandon, expecting to see a wave of relief wash over his face. Instead, I saw tears spring to his eyes. He dropped the paper, looking at me with an expression of profound remorse.

"Elena... I'm so sorry. I should have never doubted you. Not for a single second," he choked out, stepping toward me.

I stood up, accepting his embrace, but my mind was already racing. "If the test proves Luke is your son, Brandon, then what is Madeline playing at? Why would she risk everything to lie about something that could be so easily disproven?"

Dr. Evans cleared his throat, drawing our attention back to him. "There is a second part to this report, Mr. and Mrs. Vance. And this is where things become... highly unusual."

The doctor pulled out another document from the folder. "While verifying Luke’s lineage against yours, Brandon, the lab noted a massive genetic anomaly between you and the historical genetic data on file for your late father, Arthur Vance. When your father was alive, he participated in a genetic study for his cardiac illness at this very hospital. His DNA profile is in our permanent system."

Brandon frowned, confused. "What kind of anomaly?"

Dr. Evans took a deep breath. "Brandon... Luke is your biological son. You are his father. But Arthur Vance... was not your biological father. You share absolutely no paternal DNA with the man who raised you."
