Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

By noon the following day, David Vance had converted his downtown office into a war room.
The DNA results had been expedited through an independent medical lab. The result was indisputable: a 99.998% statistical match confirming that Lily and Emma were monozygotic twin sisters, and that Sarah and Robert were their biological parents.
Armed with the DNA evidence, medical records pulled by Margaret Williams, and bank statements provided by Robert detailing Eleanor’s illicit shell company transfers, Vance was ready to strike.
"Eleanor’s legal team has already filed an emergency injunction in the county family court," Vance explained, placing a stack of legal documents on the conference table. "They are arguing that Sarah has suffered a nervous breakdown, abducted Lily, and procured a fraudulent child to extort the Mitchell estate."
"She’s playing dirty," Rose said, sitting beside Emma, who was happily coloring a picture of two girls holding hands.
"That is her fatal mistake," Vance replied with a razor-sharp smile. "She thinks this is a private custody dispute she can settle behind closed doors with bought judges. She doesn't realize we’ve shifted the battlefield."
"What do you mean?" Sarah asked.
Vance turned on a large flat-screen television mounted on the wall. "I took the liberty of contacting Rachel Adams at the State Chronicle. One hour ago, we delivered a complete media dossier—including the DNA results, the hospital bribe ledgers, and Robert’s signed affidavit confessing to his mother’s orchestration of the twin’s removal."
Sarah gasped. "It’s going public?"
"It’s already public," Vance said, pointing to the television screen.
The news channel banner flashed in bright red letters: BREAKING NEWS: BIZARRE TWIN KIDNAPPING SCANDAL ROCKS QUANTUM INVESTMENTS HEIR.
On screen, a news anchor read live: "Prominent philanthropist Eleanor Mitchell is facing severe allegations after records surfaced indicating she bribed hospital administrators six years ago to cover up the birth of her granddaughter's identical twin. Sources confirm the lost twin was discovered living just miles away, raised by a local family, after a chance encounter at a downtown park..."
Sarah’s phone began ringing off the hook with calls from reporters, board members, and acquaintances. But she ignored them all. She walked over to the window, watching the street below.
"She’s trapped," Robert whispered, sitting in the corner of the room. He looked older, humbled, but resolute. "Mother’s entire power base relies on public prestige and investor confidence. The board of Quantum Investments will force her resignation by nightfall to protect the stock."
"That’s only the corporate side," Vance noted sternly. "The State Attorney General’s Office just issued a formal subpoena based on our evidence. Eleanor Mitchell, the former hospital administrator, and two corporate fixers are officially under federal criminal investigation for child trafficking and conspiracy."

Sarah looked down at Lily and Emma. The two little girls were giggling, trading hair ribbons, completely oblivious to the massive storm raging outside to protect them.
"It’s not over yet," Sarah said quietly. "Eleanor won't go down without trying to strike one last time."
