Chapter 6 - The Broken Alliance

Sarah cracked the door open, keeping the heavy security latch engaged. "How did you find us, Robert?"
Robert looked terrible. His tie was loosened, his designer jacket was rumpled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He looked like a man whose world had collapsed around him in a matter of hours.
"I tracked your credit card usage," Robert whispered desperately, leaning against the door frame. "Sarah, please. Talk to me. Let me in."
"You have thirty seconds to tell me why I shouldn't call security," Sarah said coldly.
"I didn't know about the cash," Robert pleaded, his voice breaking. "Sarah, I swear to God, I didn't know Mother paid a nurse to give Emma away to a stranger! Six years ago, when you were in surgery, Mother came out and told me the second twin didn't survive the birth. She told me the baby was stillborn and that telling you in your weak state would destroy you!"
Sarah stared at him through the narrow gap, her expression unreadable. "You lied to me for six years, Robert. You let me believe I had only one child."
"Mother brought me paperwork three days later!" Robert stammered, tears falling down his face. "She told me the baby had survived, but was born with severe brain damage and wouldn't live a month. She said she arranged for private palliative care so you wouldn't have to watch our baby suffer and die! I was weak, Sarah! I was terrified of losing you, terrified of failing my family, so I let Mother handle it! I didn't know she tried to discard Emma!"
"You were a coward, Robert," Sarah said, her voice laced with deep, cutting disappointment. "You let your mother manage your life, your marriage, and the death of your child. And now that child is standing in front of you, perfectly healthy, and all you care about is saving your own skin."
"I don't care about the company anymore!" Robert cried out, dropping to his knees in the hotel hallway. "When I saw Emma tonight... when I saw her holding Lily’s hand... I realized what a monster I’ve been. My mother threatened to strip my shares in Quantum Investments if I followed you tonight. She told me to let the lawyers handle you."
Sarah leaned closer to the crack in the door. "And what did you do?"
"I told her to go to hell," Robert sobbed. "I walked out of the house. I left my keys, my company phone, everything. Sarah, please. I don't expect you to forgive me. I know I lost the right to be your husband. But let me help you protect our daughters. Mother is bringing in her corporate legal team tomorrow morning to file emergency custody papers claiming you kidnapped Lily."
Sarah’s eyes narrowed. "If you want to redeem even a fraction of your soul, Robert, you will do exactly what I tell you to do tomorrow."

"Anything," Robert whispered, looking up with genuine desperation. "I'll do anything."
"Then get ready to testify against your own mother," Sarah declared. "Because tomorrow, we take Eleanor Mitchell down."
