Chapter 10 - The Butterfly Garden

Two years later.

The Westbrook Community Center officially opened its newest, grandest addition: The Emma & Lily Winters-Mitchell Butterfly Sanctuary.

Funded entirely through Sarah’s share of the restructured Mitchell trust, the sanctuary was a massive, light-filled glass dome housing thousands of rare butterflies, lush tropical flora, and winding stone paths. It was designed specifically as a free educational shelter and sanctuary for underprivileged children and adoptive families across the state.

On opening day, hundreds of local families gathered around the grand entrance.

Sarah stood at the podium in front of the glass doors, holding a golden ribbon-cutting pair of scissors. She looked stunning in a simple cream-colored dress, her face radiant with a peace that only complete healing can bring.

Beside her stood Rose, looking elegant and healthy, holding hands with Nurse Margaret.

And standing right in front of the ribbon were eight-year-old Lily and Emma. They were dressed in matching white dresses, both beaming with pride, their hazel eyes sparkling beneath the bright morning sun.

Sarah stepped up to the microphone. The crowd quieted down, listening intently.

"Eight years ago," Sarah spoke into the microphone, her voice carrying clear and strong across the crowd, "I was told a story that was incomplete. I was told that joy was fragile, and that love had limits dictated by circumstance, wealth, and power."

She looked down at her twin daughters, who were looking up at her with adoration.

"But love does not obey those rules," Sarah continued, her voice trembling slightly with profound emotion. "Love remembers what truth forgets. Love bridges oceans, tears down walls, and brings lost souls back home. My daughters taught me that even in the absolute darkest, coldest places, the bond between hearts cannot be erased."

The crowd applauded warmly.

Sarah stepped down from the podium, kneeling between Lily and Emma. She handed each of them one handle of the heavy golden scissors.

"Ready, sweethearts?" Sarah asked softly.

"Ready, Mommy!" both girls sang out in unison.

Together, six small hands—and two larger ones guiding them—snapped the golden ribbon in half.

The heavy glass doors swung open, and hundreds of vibrant butterflies fluttered into the morning air, soaring upward into the sunlight, free, boundless, and whole.

Emma grabbed Lily’s hand, pulling her toward the warm, sunlit interior of the glass dome. "Come on, Lily! Let's go find the ones with the petal wings!"

"Wait for me!" Lily giggled, sprinting alongside her sister.

Sarah stood at the entrance, watching her identical twin daughters run together into the bright, warm sanctuary—side by side, undivided, and forever safe in the arms of the truth.
