Chapter 4 - Confrontation at the Mansion

Footsteps echoed softly down the grand marble staircase.

Eleanor turned toward the entryway, a sharp reprimand on her tongue, but the words died in her throat. Robert gasped, staggering back a step, knocking over his silver water goblet. Water pooled across the polished table, dripping ignored onto the rug.

Walking hand in hand down the stairs were two identical six-year-old girls.

Both had brown curly hair bouncing with every step. Both wore matching pastel yellow dresses that Sarah had bought that afternoon. And as they stepped into the harsh illumination of the chandelier, both girls looked up—revealing matching, petal-shaped birthmarks over their left eyelids.

"Grandma?" Lily asked, looking confusedly at Eleanor. "Why are you yelling at Mommy?"

Emma clung tightly to Lily’s hand, hiding slightly behind her sister, her wide hazel eyes taking in the grand mansion with quiet dread. She looked at Eleanor, then at Robert, her small chest heaving with quick, frightened breaths.

"Who... who is that?" Robert choked out, his face completely drained of color. "How... where did you find her?"

"This is Emma," Sarah said, stepping over to stand defensively in front of both of her daughters. "This is the child you declared 'defective.' This is the baby you threw to the wolves. She is alive, Robert. She is healthy, brilliant, and kind. And she knows what real love looks like because a poor, honest woman named Rose raised her while you played billionaire in your empty house."

Eleanor’s composure finally shattered. Panic flared wildly in her eyes as she stared at the living proof of her crime. "This is a setup! You found a lookalike! A street urchin!"

"Look at her face, Eleanor!" Sarah yelled, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Look at her eyes! She has your late husband’s chin! She has my family's mark! Deny her all you want, but standard DNA tests will take less than twenty-four hours to prove she is Robert’s daughter!"

Robert took a hesitant step toward Emma. For a fleeting second, a flash of human regret washed across his face. "Emma...?"

Emma flinched, retreating further behind Sarah. "Mommy, I want to go home," Emma whispered, her tiny voice trembling. "I don't like this place. The lady looks mean."

"Get that child out of my house!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing a shaking, manicured finger at Emma. "Robert, call security! Call our legal team immediately! They are trespassing!"

"They aren't trespassing, Eleanor," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a register of deadly calm. "This is my home. But we are leaving. Both of my daughters and I."

"You aren't taking Lily anywhere!" Eleanor barked. "Robert, grab her!"

Robert reached out toward Sarah’s arm, but Sarah spun around, her eyes flashing with such raw, maternal rage that Robert froze in his tracks.

"Touch me or my children, Robert, and I will tear this house down around your ears tonight," Sarah warned. "You chose your mother. You chose your money. I choose my daughters."

Sarah gathered both girls into her arms, picking Emma up on her left hip and holding Lily’s hand tightly on her right. She walked past her stunned, motionless husband and her furious mother-in-law without looking back once.

As the heavy oak front doors slammed shut behind them, Sarah carried her twins down the steps into the cool night air, where Rose was waiting in a taxi at the end of the driveway.

The war had officially begun.
