Chapter 6 - The Verdict of the Heart

Back in Boston, the legal battle moved with unprecedented speed, fueled by top-tier legal counsel and the unexpected affidavit of support signed by Elena Martinez. Yet, the emotional toll of the proceedings weighed heavily on everyone involved, especially Clara, who found herself caught between social workers, court-appointed psychologists, and the relentless flashbulbs of paparazzi staking out Sunshine House.
Gabriel spent every available hour at the orphanage, bringing books, puzzles, and simple meals, refusing to let Clara feel abandoned even for a single day.
On a crisp Friday morning, the final custody hearing took place in the chambers of Judge Sarah Sterling. The courtroom was quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioning and the rustle of legal documents. Judge Sterling, a formidable jurist known for her strict adherence to child welfare laws, adjusted her reading glasses and looked across the mahogany desk at Gabriel and his legal team.
"Mr. Mendes," Judge Sterling began, her voice echoing in the solemn room. "The court has reviewed the genetic testing confirming your paternity. We have also evaluated the social services report, the endowment agreement for Sunshine House, and the notarized waiver of contestation filed by Ms. Elena Martinez."
Gabriel sat rigid, his hands clasped tightly together on his lap. Beside him, his lead attorney gave him an encouraging nod, but the seconds ticked by like lead weights.
"In standard custody cases where a parent has been absent for the child's early life, this court exercises extreme caution," Judge Sterling continued, looking directly into Gabriel's eyes. "However, the child's primary caregiver, Catherine Morrison, and her maternal aunt both attest to your active, dedicated involvement over the past two weeks. Furthermore, psychological evaluations confirm that a profound, healthy bond has already been established between you and Clara Rose Martinez."
She picked up her heavy wooden gavel.
"It is the judgment of this court that full legal custody and guardianship of Clara Rose Martinez is granted to her biological father, Gabriel Mendes. Case closed."
The sharp crack of the gavel echoed through the room like a gunshot. For the first time in over twenty years, a genuine, blinding smile broke across Gabriel’s face. He stood up, shaking hands with his attorneys, before turning toward the back of the courtroom where Clara was waiting with Catherine.
The little girl didn't wait for formalities. She broke away from Catherine and ran down the aisle, leaping into Gabriel’s open arms. He caught her effortlessly, spinning her around as laughter bubbled up from deep inside his chest—a sound he hadn't made since he was a boy.

"Does this mean I get to move into your big castle now?" Clara asked, her green eyes sparkling with excitement.
"It means," Gabriel whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, "we're going home, together."
