Chapter 3 - The Broken Promise Reclaimed

The morning sun cast a pale golden glow over the worn brick facade of Sunshine House. Unlike his arrival the previous day—announced by luxury cars and PR entourages—Gabriel’s car pulled up quietly at 9:00 AM sharp. He stepped out dressed casually in a dark cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, looking less like a billionaire CEO and more like a man trying to mend a fractured piece of his soul.

Catherine Morrison was waiting by the front entrance, her expression a mix of surprise and cautious optimism.

"Mr. Mendes, I didn't expect you back so soon," she said, wiping her hands on her apron. "The press release from your office was already scheduled for noon to announce your charitable donation."

"Cancel the press release, Catherine," Gabriel said calmly, his voice carrying an undeniable authority. "I'm not here for a photo op today."

Catherine studied his face, noting the dark circles under his eyes and the unmistakable softness in his usually stern expression. "Clara is in the art room. She’s been asking all morning if the man from the photograph was coming back."

"Take me to her."

As they walked down the brightly painted hallway, the familiar scent of children's laughter and watercolor paint filled the air. When they reached the open doorway of the art room, Gabriel paused. Clara sat at a low wooden table, struggling to color a picture of a sailboat while a stray lock of brown hair fell across her forehead.

"Clara," Catherine called softly.

The little girl looked up, her emerald eyes widening with instant recognition. Dropping her yellow crayon, she scrambled off the small stool and ran across the room, throwing her arms around Gabriel’s knees.

"You came back!" she exclaimed, looking up at him with unadulterated joy. "I knew you would! Mom said you always kept your promises when you really cared."

Gabriel felt a lump form in his throat. He knelt down to her eye level, his hands gently resting on her shoulders. "I'm sorry it took me so long, Clara. But I'm here now. And I brought your mother's photograph back." He carefully pulled the worn picture from his pocket and handed it to her.

Clara beamed, clutching the photo to her chest as if it were the most valuable treasure on earth. "Can we draw together? I was making a boat. Mom and I used to go to the river and watch the boats go by."

"I would love nothing more," Gabriel whispered, pulling up a tiny chair that was far too small for his frame, completely unbothered by the discomfort.

For the next two hours, the billionaire who dictated market trends and negotiated multi-million-dollar mergers sat cross-legged at a child's table, coloring clumsy sailboats with a little girl who didn't care about his money, but simply wanted someone to share her world.

Later that afternoon, in Catherine’s office, Gabriel made a decision that would shock the business world. He placed his checkbook on the desk, but instead of writing a standard corporate donation, he slid a legal document toward the director.

"What is this?" Catherine asked, adjusting her glasses as she scanned the pages.

"It's a full-scale endowment for Sunshine House, funded privately by me, ensuring this facility never lacks resources again," Gabriel said steadily. "And second... I want to initiate the process for legal guardianship of Clara."

Catherine gasped, dropping her pen. "Mr. Mendes, adoption and guardianship proceedings for a high-net-worth individual with your public profile... it's complex. It requires background checks, home assessments, and court approvals. It's not a corporate merger you can rush."

"I know," Gabriel replied, his gaze unwavering. "And I have the best legal team in the country ready to do it by the book. But more importantly... I am her father. It’s time I started acting like one."
