Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in Chicago

The private jet touched down at O'Hare International Airport under a gray, spitting Chicago sky. Gabriel stepped off the tarmac into the biting wind, his mind focused entirely on a single objective: Elena Martinez. If Clara’s aunt decided to fight for custody out of spite or obligation, the legal battle could drag on for months, keeping Clara trapped in the orphanage while the media tore their lives apart.

The address he had tracked down led to a modest, well-kept townhouse in a quiet northern suburb. Gabriel walked up the cobblestone path and pressed the doorbell. A few moments later, the door swung open, revealing a woman in her late forties with sharp features, dark hair pulled back into a tight bun, and eyes that instantly mirrored the striking green gaze of her late sister.

"Can I help you?" Elena asked, her voice guarded and instantly hostile as she looked past him at the sleek black town car parked at the curb.

"Elena Martinez?" Gabriel asked, keeping his tone measured and respectful. "I'm Gabriel Mendes."

The woman’s breath hitched. The color drained from her face as recognition set in. She gripped the edge of the door so hard her knuckles turned white.

"You," she whispered, her voice trembling with decades of accumulated rage. "You have the absolute audacity to show up at my doorstep after what you did to Lucia?"

"I know how this looks—" Gabriel began, but she cut him off with a sharp gesture.

"You broke her heart, Mr. Mendes! You walked away from her when she was pregnant, trading her for your precious corporate ladder!" Elena’s voice rose, cracking with emotion. "Lucia spent the rest of her life trying to rebuild herself while you sat in your ivory tower. And now that she’s gone... now that she’s dead and buried... you have the nerve to come here?"

"I didn't know," Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a low, painful whisper. "Elena... I didn't know about Clara until three days ago."

Elena stared at him, searching his eyes for deception. What she found there wasn't the arrogant college student who had abandoned her sister twenty years ago, but a broken, exhausted man who was desperately trying to redeem a lifetime of mistakes.

"She loved you until her final breath," Elena said, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Even when she was sick in that hospital bed, holding that stupid old photograph, she believed you were a good man deep down. She told me, 'Elena, if Gabriel ever finds out, he will do the right thing.'"

"I want to do the right thing," Gabriel said, stepping closer. "I want to give Clara everything she deserves. I want to be her father. But I need your support, Elena. If you contest my custody in court, it will drag out for months, and Clara will suffer the most."

Elena crossed her arms, looking away toward the gray Chicago skyline. For a long time, the only sound was the howling wind against the porch.

"I don't care about your money, Gabriel," Elena said firmly, turning back to look him in the eye. "I care about my niece. If you hurt her the way you hurt Lucia... I will tear your empire down to the ground with my bare hands."

"You have my word," Gabriel said, extending his hand. "My life is hers now."

Elena looked at his outstretched hand for a long moment before slowly taking it, sealing a fragile truce that would pave the way for the courtroom battle ahead.
