Chapter 9 - Healing the Broken Ground

Six months passed, and the atmosphere around the Starks estate underwent a quiet, radical transformation.

The dark aura of fear and suspicion that had defined Rory Starks' household for years began to soften. While he remained a powerful and formidable figure in the city's commercial and shipping sectors, his priorities had fundamentally shifted. The ruthlessness that had once driven him to expand his criminal empire was now channeled into protecting his home and ensuring a legitimate, peaceful future for his daughters.

Under Veronica’s management, the estate blossomed. The dark draperies were replaced with bright, airy fabrics; the cold, oppressive silence was filled with music, laughter, and the bustling energy of a home restored to life.

Veronica’s father, Mateo, and her younger brother, Tomas, had settled comfortably into their new townhouse. Mateo, a brilliant engineer who had spent years living in fear of cartels, was hired by Rory to head the estate’s technical security infrastructure—ensuring that no rogue device or electronic threat could ever breach the home again.

Lily and Rose were thriving. The nightmares had ceased completely from the night the bear was destroyed. Their cheeks were rosy, their school reports were glowing, and their bonds with both their father and Veronica grew deeper every day.

One crisp autumn afternoon, Rory sat on the back terrace, watching Lily, Rose, and Veronica flying a colorful kite across the sprawling green lawn. The ocean breeze blew gently off the water, carrying the girls' bright, ringing laughter across the grounds.

Viktor walked out onto the terrace, holding a thin leather portfolio. He stood beside Rory, looking out at the lawn.

"The final transfer went through today, Boss," Viktor reported quietly. "All legacy dock operations have been fully converted into legal, legitimate logistics corporations. The old syndicate ties are completely severed. We are clean."

Rory took a sip of his coffee, never taking his eyes off his daughters. "Good. What about Vance's old associates?"

"Scattered. None of them will ever pose a threat again," Viktor replied. He hesitated for a moment, then looked at Rory with a rare, genuine smile. "You know... the house feels different now. Better."

"It has a heart now, Viktor," Rory said softly. "It didn't before."

Viktor nodded respectfully and walked back inside, leaving Rory to his thoughts.

Rory stood up and walked down the marble steps onto the grass. Lily and Rose spotted him and came running over, the kite trailing behind them in the bright blue sky.

"Daddy! Look how high it went!" Rose squealed, pointing at the sky.

"Miss Veronica taught us how to catch the wind!" Lily added excitedly, wrapping her arms around her father's leg.

Rory laughed, scooping both girls into his arms. He looked up to see Veronica walking toward them, her face glowing with happiness.

"They're natural pilots," Veronica said warmly, wiping a streak of grass from Rose's cheek.

"They get their stubbornness from me," Rory replied, his eyes meeting hers with deep, unspoken affection. "And their brightness from you."

Veronica blushed slightly, smiling back. Over the past six months, the bond between them had grown into something far deeper than employer and employee—it was a mutual respect and affection rooted in shared loyalty, protection, and trust.
