Chapter 5 - The Shadow Network

By midnight, the Starks estate was operating under war protocols. Armed men in dark suits stood guard every ten yards along the iron fences. The glass walls of Rory’s office were covered with thick blast-proof shades, and tactical maps of the tri-state area were spread across the central mahogany table.

Rory stood by the window, a glass of untouched whiskey in his hand, watching the rain beat against the glass. Behind him, Veronica sat at a computer terminal alongside Rory’s chief cybersecurity analyst, a young technician named Leo.

"I found the signal route," Leo announced, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Veronica was right. The device in the bear wasn't just running on an automated timer. It was receiving a tight-beam radio ping every night at 2:58 a.m., triggering the 3:00 a.m. ultrasonic pulse."

"Can you trace the ping?" Rory asked without turning around.

"We did," Veronica replied, looking up from her monitor. "The ping originates from a relay station located on a commercial cargo ship anchored three miles off the coast of Long Island. The ship is registered to a front company owned by Marcus Vance."

Rory turned around, his eyes cold and sharp. "He’s been monitoring the estate from international waters. He triggers the device, waits for my security system to go offline when I rush to the nursery, and then hacks into my terminal remotely to copy my shipping manifests and bank encryption codes."

"He's already downloaded nearly sixty percent of your operational data over the last two months," Leo added nervously. "If he gets the remaining forty percent, he'll have total access to your entire financial network. He could wipe you out overnight."

Rory walked over to the table and looked at Veronica. "You've proven yourself far more capable than a housemaid, Veronica. Your knowledge of these devices... your intuition. You saved my daughters' lives."

Veronica bowed her head slightly. "I only wanted to help the girls, Mr. Starks. No child deserves to suffer like that."

"Vance thinks his plan is still working," Rory said, a ruthless smile creeping across his face. "He doesn't know we found the transducer inside the bear. He thinks tonight will be just like every other night."

"What are you going to do?" Veronica asked.

"Tonight at 3:00 a.m., we feed him what he wants," Rory declared. "We set a trap. But I need to make sure my daughters are safe first."

He looked at Veronica with a rare moment of genuine vulnerability. "I can't trust anyone else in this house right now. Half my staff could be on Vance’s payroll. I need you to stay with Lily and Rose. Keep them safe while I settle this."

"I will protect them with my life, Mr. Starks," Veronica promised earnestly.

"Good," Rory said. He turned to Viktor. "Prepare the assault team. We're going to pay Marcus Vance a visit on his boat."
