Chapter 4 - The Web of Betrayal

The basement of the Starks estate was a stark contrast to the opulence above. Built beneath reinforced concrete foundations, it housed a vault, a secure communications hub, and a soundproofed room used for sensitive interrogations.

Susan Starks sat on a metal chair in the center of the concrete room, her designer purse clutched tightly in her lap. She was a stylish woman in her late thirties, dressed in silk and gold jewelry, but her eyes darted frantically around the room. Two armed guards stood motionless at the door.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Rory walked in, followed by Viktor and Veronica.

Veronica had tried to stay upstairs with the twins, but Rory had explicitly commanded her to accompany him. “You recognized the device,” he had told her. “You’re going to help me understand why it was put there.”

Rory walked to the table, pulled out a second chair, and sat down directly across from Susan. He placed the matte-black metal device and the gutted remains of the teddy bear on the table between them.

Susan gasped, her eyes locking onto the severed toy. "Rory... what is this? Why did your men drag me down here? I was supposed to have lunch in town!"

"Two months ago, Susan," Rory began, his tone eerie in its calm, "you gave Lily and Rose this bear for their birthday. You told them it was a special guardian angel bear. You told them never to sleep without it."

"Yes! They loved it!" Susan stuttered, clutching her pearl necklace. "What did you do to it? Why did you ruin it?"

Rory picked up the black metal box and slid it across the cold metal table until it tapped against Susan’s manicured fingers.

"That device inside the bear has been emitting ultrasonic pulses every night at 3:00 a.m.," Rory said. "It causes severe intracranial pressure. It was frying my daughters' nervous systems while they slept. It’s why they’ve been screaming in pain."

Susan’s face drained of color. "That's... that's impossible! I bought that bear at a boutique in Manhattan! It's an antique!"

"You're lying," Veronica interjected quietly from behind Rory.

Susan snapped her head toward the maid, her eyes flaring with contempt. "Keep your mouth shut, girl! You're a servant! How dare you speak to me—"

"Silence," Rory barked, and Susan instantly went quiet, shivering. He looked back at Veronica. "Explain."

Veronica took a step forward, staring at the black box. "That device isn't commercial technology. It’s custom-built, military-grade hardware. It has a localized short-range receiver. Whoever installed this wasn't just trying to hurt the girls; they were using the girls' distress to force a reaction."

Veronica looked at Rory. "When the girls scream at 3:00 a.m., what do you do, Mr. Starks?"

Rory froze. His eyes narrowed as the horrific reality began to assemble itself in his mind.

"Every night at 3:00 a.m.," Rory said slowly, "when they scream... I leave my office. I turn off the master security grid so the medical team can run up the stairs without triggering the perimeter alarms. I stay in the nursery for an hour... leaving my personal computer and the vault access terminal unlocked upstairs."

A heavy silence fell over the interrogation room.

Rory turned his terrifying gaze back to Susan. "Someone wanted me out of my office at precisely 3:00 a.m. Every single night. They used my daughters' pain as a clockwork distraction."

Susan was trembling uncontrollably now. Tears streaked her heavy mascara, running down her pale cheeks. "Rory... please... I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know what was inside it!"

"Who gave you the bear, Susan?" Rory demanded, leaning across the table until he was inches from her face. "Tell me, or I will hand you over to Viktor, and I promise you won't like the rest of your day."

"It was... it was Marcus!" Susan sobbed, breaking completely. "Marcus Vance! He came to me two months ago!"

Rory’s expression darkened. Marcus Vance was his chief rival—the head of the Vance Syndicate, a brutal competitor who had been trying to seize control of the New York shipping docks for years.

"What did Vance offer you?" Rory asked softly.

"He... he said he had proof that my husband’s death wasn't an accident," Susan wept, covering her face with her hands. "He said you killed my husband to take total control of the Starks empire! He said if I helped him place the bear in the nursery, he would give me twenty million dollars and immunity when he took over your territory! He told me the bear just had a listening bug in it! He said it would only record your conversations! He swear to me it wouldn't hurt the girls! I didn't know, Rory! I swear I didn't know it was hurting them!"

Rory stood up slowly. The sheer coldness in his aura made even Viktor take a subtle step back.

"You traded my daughters' sanity for twenty million dollars and a lie," Rory said softly.

"Rory, please! I'm family!" Susan screamed, falling to her knees and grabbing at his trousers. "I'm your brother's widow!"

Rory didn't even look down at her. "Viktor. Lock her in the holding cell. Strip her of all communication devices. We deal with Vance first."
