Chapter 8 - The Delayed Date

One month after the chaos had settled, the city was quiet, returning to its normal rhythm, but for Enzo Marchetti, nothing would ever be the same again.
It was a crisp Saturday evening. Lombardi's restaurant was bustling with its usual lively dinner crowd. The soft glow of candlelight flickered across white tablecloths, and the rich aroma of garlic and truffle filled the air.
At the center table—the very one Enzo had reserved weeks ago—sat a couple that immediately drew the quiet, respectful glances of everyone in the room.
Enzo wore a flawless black tuxedo, his expression softened by a quiet, genuine happiness. Across from him sat Claire, breathtaking in a stunning, elegant blue dress that hugged her silhouette perfectly. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, and her stormy grey eyes shone with joy and laughter.
A few tables away, Ray and Angelo sat disguised as regular diners, keeping a discreet, watchful eye on the room, though tonight, they were entirely unnecessary. The city belonged to peace.
The young waiter with the trembling hands—the very same one from that fateful night—nervously approached their table, holding a bottle of the finest vintage chianti.
"Good evening, Mr. Marchetti. Good evening, signora," the waiter said, pouring the wine with steady, practiced grace. "Compliments of the house."
"Thank you," Enzo said, raising his glass toward Claire. "To patience."
Claire smiled, her eyes locking onto his with a deep, unspoken devotion. She raised her glass to clink against his. "And to blind dates that don't go according to plan."
Across the restaurant, the door chimed softly as a little girl with a bright red ribbon in her hair skipped inside, holding a small box of chocolates. Sadie ran straight over to their table, sliding into the empty seat beside Claire with a bright, infectious grin.
"Did you save me some dessert, Uncle Enzo?" Sadie asked eagerly.
May you like
Enzo laughed—a rich, booming sound that completely transformed his stern features, a sound that no one in Lombardi's had ever heard before. He pulled a small menu toward her, his heart fuller than it had ever been in his thirty-seven years of life.
"Everything on the menu is yours, sweetheart," Enzo said, reaching across the table to squeeze Claire's hand.
