Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

Two weeks later, the puzzle was complete. Claire had successfully decrypted the entire financial trail, exposing a massive corruption ring involving several high-ranking city officials who had been funneling illicit funds through shell corporations to finance criminal enterprises across the state.

The mastermind behind it all was none other than Marcus Vance—not the doctor, but the city's Deputy Mayor, who had secretly partnered with the West Side crew to launder money and eliminate anyone who threatened to expose them.

"This is it," Claire said, sliding a printed dossier across Enzo's mahogany desk in his private study. "Every transaction, every offshore account, every bribe recorded down to the exact timestamp. If we release this to the federal prosecutors and the independent press simultaneously, the entire syndicate collapses from the top down."

Enzo looked over the documents, his face a mask of cold calculation. "And they know you have this?"

"They suspect it. Which is why they tried to break into my apartment that night," Claire said evenly. "They knew I was auditing the accounts."

Enzo stood up, walking over to the window that overlooked the courtyard. He adjusted his cuffs, his mind working with ruthless efficiency. "They won't get a second chance. Tomorrow morning, this information goes public. And tonight, we settle the remaining accounts."

"Enzo..." Claire stood up, walking behind him. She placed her hands gently on his shoulders, feeling the heavy tension in his muscles. "Be careful."

Enzo turned around, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. He buried his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of vanilla and rain. "Nothing is going to happen to me, Claire. I have too much to live for now."

That night, Enzo’s enforcers moved across the city like ghosts. Without firing a single shot, they delivered copies of the encrypted evidence to federal authorities, media outlets, and key figures within the police department. By dawn, warrants were issued, and the city council chambers were thrown into utter chaos. Deputy Mayor Marcus Vance was arrested before he could even reach his limousine, his criminal empire crumbling around him in a matter of hours.
