Chapter 6 - Healing and Shadows

Recovery was a slow, painful process, but Claire proved to be every bit as resilient as Enzo had suspected. Over the next three weeks, Enzo moved Claire and Sadie out of the dilapidated 4th Street apartment and into a secure, heavily guarded brownstone in the upscale district of the city—a place where safety was absolute and the outside world could not reach them.

Enzo’s world began to shift around the edges. For thirty-seven years, his life had been measured in bullets, debts, and ledgers. Now, it was measured in small, domestic rhythms that felt entirely foreign yet deeply intoxicating.

It started with breakfast. Enzo, a man who usually subsisted on black coffee and operational briefings, found himself sitting at a marble kitchen island, watching Claire—still moving gingerly with a taped rib—flip pancakes for a giggling Sadie.

"You're putting too much butter on that, Uncle Enzo," Sadie teased, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she pointed a spoon at him. She had taken to calling him 'Uncle Enzo' within the first week, a title he hadn't protested once.

"It's good for the soul, sweetheart," Enzo replied, sipping his espresso with a deadpan expression.

Claire looked over her shoulder, smiling warmly. "Don't encourage her. She already eats enough sugar to power a locomotive."

Enzo watched the way the morning light caught her hair, the easy grace with which she moved despite her healing injuries. He realized with a jolt that he didn't want this to be temporary. The empty hollow in his chest—the one he had carried since his father's funeral—was finally filling up with something warm, steady, and real.

However, the underworld does not simply pause because a mafia boss falls in love.

One evening, while Sadie was fast asleep upstairs, Enzo and Claire sat together on the back patio overlooking a private courtyard garden. The night air was cool, scented with blooming jasmine. Claire was reviewing financial documents on her tablet—she was a forensic accountant who had unwittingly stumbled upon money-laundering schemes tied to the remnants of Salvatore’s syndicate, which was why they had targeted her.

"The encryption on this drive is sophisticated," Claire said, tapping the screen. "Salvatore was just a front. The real capital is coming from someone higher up—someone in the city council."

Enzo poured her a glass of chamomile tea, his eyes dark and focused. "Give me the name."

"Not yet," Claire said, looking up at him, her stormy grey eyes serious. "I need to verify the last three routing numbers. I won't let you go into a war blind, Enzo. My work is my responsibility."

"Your responsibility right now is healing," Enzo countered gently, though there was steel beneath his words. "Let my men handle the legwork."

Claire sighed, setting the tablet down. She leaned back in her chair, looking at him with a mix of gratitude and wonder. "You know, when Rosa told me she was setting me up with a terrifying mafia boss, I thought she had lost her mind. Now... I think she might have been the sanest person in the city."

"Rosa has her moments," Enzo agreed, a rare chuckle escaping him. He reached across the table and covered her hand with his. "Are you regretting it?"

"Not for a second," Claire whispered.
