Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

The trial lasted for two grueling months, dominating every news outlet globally. The public rallied behind me, calling me the "Lioness of Beverly Hills." A mother who fought back, who outsmarted the corrupt elite to protect her child.
Every piece of dirty laundry was aired. The night nurse, who had fully recovered from the sedative, gave a tearful testimony about how she had trusted Nathan as a supportive husband, only to be poisoned by him. The pediatric cardiologists testified that Nathan had tried to bribe them to falsify medical records to hide the baby’s true identity.
The defense tried to argue that Nathan was acting out of temporary insanity, driven by the stress of having a sick child with his first love.
But when I took the stand, their entire defense dissolved.
I stood before the jury, calm, collected, and powerful. I recounted the seven years of marriage, the subtle gaslighting, the way Nathan and his mother had treated me as an outsider, a mere vessel for their legacy. And then, I played the audio recording of Nathan’s words to Vanessa: "For you, I'd let them bury Olivia beside that dying child if I had to."
The jury gasped. Several jurors looked at Nathan with absolute revulsion.
The verdict was returned in less than two hours.
Guilty on all counts.
The judge, a severe woman with no patience for entitled elite criminals, leveled her gaze at Nathan.
"Nathan Caldwell, your actions demonstrate a level of calculating malice and sociopathic disregard for human life that this court rarely sees. You betrayed your wife, poisoned an innocent healthcare worker, and attempted to steal a child for your own narcissistic desires."
She sentenced him to the maximum penalty: thirty-five years in a maximum-security penitentiary, with no possibility of parole for the first twenty-five. Vanessa was sentenced to twelve years.

As the guards led Nathan away, he turned back to look at me one last time. He mouthed the words, "I’m sorry."
I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply turned my back on him, walking out of the courtroom and into the bright California sun, leaving the ghost of Nathan Caldwell behind forever.
