Chapter 5 - The Grand Reveal

The silence in the parlor was so absolute you could hear the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall.

Nathan’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His hands began to tremble violently. "You... you saw?"

"Every single second of it," I replied, leaning back. "I heard everything, Nathan. I heard you tell Vanessa that you would let them bury me beside a dying child if you had to. I heard how much you loved her. And I watched you take a healthy baby and hand him to your mistress."

Evelyn looked between her son and me, her aristocratic composure cracking. "Nathan... what is she talking about? What did you do?"

"But here is the part you didn't know, Nathan," I continued, ignoring Evelyn entirely. I pulled a high-definition photograph from my handbag and tossed it onto the table. It was a close-up picture of a tiny, perfect newborn foot, featuring a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark.

"What is this?" Nathan whispered, his voice shaking.

"That is my son’s birthmark. A mark he has had since the moment he was born. A mark I noticed before you committed your little crime." I leaned forward, my eyes locking onto his. "An hour after you swapped the babies, I hired a private medical team, walked into Vanessa’s room, and swapped them right back."

Nathan gasped, his knees literally giving out. He stumbled back against the fireplace mantel. "No... no, that’s impossible. I checked the hospital bracelets! They were sealed!"

"I replaced them," I said calmly. "It’s amazing what half a million dollars can buy you in terms of medical discretion. The baby you gave to Vanessa... the baby you spent the last three weeks trying to save... the baby that died yesterday morning... was Vanessa’s own biological son."

"No!" Nathan shrieked, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony tearing from his throat. "No, you’re lying! You’re lying to hurt me!"

"Am I?" I pulled out my tablet and tapped the screen, playing the live video feed from the Aspen estate. On the screen, Leo was sitting in the arms of a nanny, laughing, his cheeks rosy, glowing with perfect health. The nanny lifted his left foot, showing the camera the crescent mark.

"My son is alive, Nathan. He is healthy. He is safe. And he is legally mine. You signed the post-nuptial agreement waiving all parental rights to the child in my custody. You legally disowned your own healthy heir because you thought he was a dying liability."

Evelyn let out a sharp cry and collapsed onto the armchair, clutching her chest. "You... you fool, Nathan! You threw away the Caldwell heir for a bastard that died anyway?!"

May you like

"Olivia, please!" Nathan fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face, crawling toward me. "He’s my son too! You can't do this! I love him! I’ll leave Vanessa, I’ll do anything! Please, give me my son!"

"Your son?" I stood up, looking down at him with nothing but disgust. "You sentenced him to a life of neglect. You tried to bury me. You have no son, Nathan. You only have debt."
