Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of Ruin

The aftermath of the confrontation was swift and merciless.

The seven-day deadline for the ninety million dollar loan expired. With Nathan completely incapacitated by psychological shock and Evelyn trying desperately to shield their assets, Vance Holdings executed the hostile takeover.

By the end of the week, the Caldwell mansion in Bel Air was seized. The moving trucks arrived, packing away generations of stolen luxury. Evelyn Caldwell was forced to move into a tiny, two-bedroom apartment in a mediocre suburb of Glendale—a fate she considered worse than death. Every day, the press hounded her, publishing stories of the Caldwell family’s sudden and spectacular bankruptcy.

But the financial ruin was only the beginning.

I handed over the evidence of Nathan’s hospital crimes to the District Attorney. The surveillance footage from the hospital hallway, the medical records from the private agency, and the toxicology reports showing the sedative injected into the night nurse were delivered in a neat, undeniable package.

The police arrested Nathan at a cheap motel near the L.A. river, where he had been hiding out, drinking heavily.

The media circus was unprecedented. The headlines screamed: Billionaire Heir Arrested for Newborn Kidnapping and Medical Assault! The Beverly Hills Baby Switch: The Downfall of Nathan Caldwell.

Vanessa Monroe wasn't spared either. As an accomplice to the attempted kidnapping and fraud, she was arrested at the Malibu villa. Without Nathan’s money to protect her, her legal defense crumbled instantly.

During the preliminary hearings, I sat in the front row of the courtroom, dressed in an immaculate white trench coat, looking every bit the victorious queen. Nathan was led in wearing an orange jumpsuit, handcuffed and shackled. His hair was disheveled, his face hollowed out by regret and prison food.

When his eyes met mine, he didn't look angry anymore. He looked terrified. He looked like a man who finally understood that he had played a game against a grandmaster while he was playing checkers.

Vanessa sat next to her public defender, weeping softly, her eyes locked on the floor. She had lost her child, her lover, her freedom, and her dignity.

My uncle Arthur sat beside me, tapping his pen. "The DA is offering Nathan a plea deal. Twenty-five years without parole if he pleads guilty to all counts of kidnapping, assault, and corporate embezzlement. Vanessa is looking at ten years."

"Tell the DA not to accept a plea," I said softly, my voice cold. "I want a full trial. I want every single detail of their cruelty broadcast to the world. I want the name Caldwell to be synonymous with garbage."
