Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Vow

The aftermath of the attack was handled with terrifying efficiency. Within two hours, Julian’s men had cleared the estate, removed the bodies, and secured the perimeter. The Maroni family’s assault had been completely crushed, their leadership eliminated in a single, merciless counter-strike executed by Julian’s loyal lieutenant, a quiet man named Marcus.

Mrs. Gable was bruised but alive, having hidden in the pantry after knocking out the first intruder. But the emotional damage to our small, makeshift family was profound.

The next morning, the sun broke through the clouds, casting bright golden light through the nursery windows. I sat in the rocking chair, nursing Nathan while Noah slept peacefully in his crib.

The door opened slowly. Julian stood in the doorway. He was dressed in a simple dark gray sweater and slacks, looking exhausted, dark shadows under his eyes. He didn't come inside; he stayed at the threshold, as if an invisible line kept him from entering the pristine sanctuary of the nursery.

"The house is secure," Julian said quietly. "The Maroni family is no longer a threat. Neither is Dante."

"I know," I replied softly.

"I have arranged for a villa in the south of France," he continued, looking down at his polished shoes. "It is fully staffed, completely private, and entirely removed from the Syndicate's operations. Papers have been drafted to give you full legal guardianship of Noah and Nathan under an assumed identity. You will never have to worry about money, safety, or social services again."

I stopped rocking. "You're sending us away?"

"I am giving you your freedom," Julian said, his voice tight, laced with a deep, repressed sorrow. "Last night... you saw what I am, Elena. I am a violent man who lives in a violent world. I brought danger into your life. I almost got those boys killed. I won't let my darkness ruin you."

"You saved us," I said firmly, standing up with Nathan in my arms and walking straight toward him.

Julian took a step back into the hallway, refusing to let me get closer. "I am a killer, Elena! I shot a man in front of you without blinking!"

"You shot a man who was going to kill two innocent babies!" I shouted back, my anger flaring. "You think I care about your reputation? You think I care about the bloody politics of your family? Do you know what I saw last night, Julian?"

Julian stayed silent, staring at me with tormented eyes.

"I saw a man who drove through a storm, fought through an army of men, and walked into a cellar to protect a woman and two infants who weren't even his," I said, my voice softening, tears welling in my eyes. "I saw the man who bought formula when I had nothing left to give. I saw the man who held Nathan at 3:00 AM when he thought no one was watching."

I stepped across the threshold, closing the distance between us until I was standing right in front of him. I reached up with my free hand and placed my palm against his cheek. His skin was rough, hot against my cold fingers. He flinched at first, then leaned into my touch, closing his eyes as a shudder passed through his tall frame.

"Don't send us away," I whispered. "We don't want France. We don't want an assumed identity. We want you."

Julian opened his eyes, dark and shining with unshed tears. "Elena... I don't know how to be what you need. I don't know how to be good."

May you like

"You don't have to be perfect," I said, bringing his hand up to touch Nathan's small back. "You just have to stay."

Julian looked down at Nathan, who reached out and grabbed his finger just as he had on our first night at the estate. A single tear slipped down Julian’s cheek. He pulled me into his arms—careful not to crush the baby—and buried his face in my hair, holding us as if we were the only real things left in a world built on shadows.
