Chapter 10 - The Home We Built

Five years later.

The summer afternoon sun was warm over the grounds of Blackwood Estate, which had long ceased to feel like a fortress and had become a true home. The heavy security gates were still there, but they were now lined with blooming hydrangeas and climbing jasmine. The guards still patrolled, but they were instructions to keep their weapons out of sight and occasionally catch runaway baseballs.

I sat on the wide wrap-around porch, sipping iced tea, watching eight-year-old Noah and Nathan running across the sweeping lawn, kicking a soccer ball back and forth with Marcus, who had traded his terrifying lieutenant persona for the role of an overly indulgent uncle.

Nathan was still the quiet, analytical one, reading books in the library for hours before executing perfect soccer passes. Noah was still the loud, expressive one, cheering wildly every time he scored a goal. They were healthy, happy, and thriving—a far cry from the suitcase cribs of Room 214.

The glass door behind me slid open, and Julian stepped out onto the porch.

He looked as magnificent as ever, though the sharp, ruthless edges of his youth had softened into the quiet confidence of a man who was completely at peace with his life. He carried a tiny, blanket-wrapped bundle in his arms.

"She's awake," Julian whispered, a look of profound, gentle awe on his face.

I stood up, walking over to him. In his arms lay our daughter, three-month-old Grace Vance. She had Julian's dark hair and my green eyes, looking up at her father with wide, curious eyes.

Julian sat down on the porch swing, settling our daughter against his chest, his large hand gently cradling her small head. I sat beside him, resting my head against his shoulder, wrapping my arm around his waist.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked softly, watching our boys laugh as they chased Marcus across the grass.

Julian looked down at little Grace, then out at the boys, and finally at me. He leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to my temple.

"I was thinking about the night I walked into Room 214," Julian said quietly, his voice rich with warmth. "I was a man looking to inspect a piece of concrete and steel. I thought I owned everything in this city. But I didn't own a single thing that mattered until I found you."

"You asked me if I wanted one," Julian continued, a faint, lovely smile touching his lips as he remembered my desperate, heartbreaking question from that night. 'If I can't save them both, would you take one?'

"And what's your answer now, Mr. Vance?" I asked softly, smiling up at him.

Julian wrapped his arm around my shoulders, holding me, our daughter, and our life tight against his heart.

May you like

"I'll take all of you," Julian whispered, his voice steady, filled with endless love. "Every single one. Forever."

As the sun set over Blackwood Estate, painting the sky in shades of gold, rose, and purple, I closed my eyes and breathed in the sweet air of our home. The broken promise was fulfilled, the shadows were gone, and the mafia boss who found me in an abandoned hotel had given us the greatest story of all: a place where we finally belonged.
