Chapter 5 - The Masquerade of Sins

A month into my stay at Blackwood, the reality of Julian's world collided violently with my own.
It began with an invitation. The Syndicate was holding its annual charity gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel downtown—a public display of wealth and legitimacy designed to keep the city's political elite aligned with the Vance family interests.
"You need to attend," Julian told me one evening in his library. He sat behind a massive mahogany desk littered with financial documents and maps of the harbor.
"Me?" I gasped, looking down at my simple cotton dress. "Julian, I don't belong at a gala. I belong in a nursery."
"The social worker who was hunting for you—a woman named Miller—has filed a petition with the city court," Julian explained, leaning back in his leather chair. "She suspects you're being harbored by someone powerful. If you appear at my side tomorrow night as my official companion, dressed in couture, backed by my legal team, no judge in this city will dare sign a search warrant against my properties. We establish your status as a woman under my personal protection."
"A companion?" I repeated, my pulse racing. "You want me to act like your girlfriend?"
"I want you to act like a woman who is untouchable," Julian said, standing up and walking around his desk until he was standing directly in front of me. He reached out, his gloved thumb gently tracing the line of my jawline. "Can you do that for me, Elena?"
My breath hitched. His touch sent a shockwave through my skin, waking up feelings I had buried deep inside since the night Grace died. "I... I can try."
The night of the gala, the transformation was staggering. A team of stylists provided by Julian dressed me in a dark emerald green silk gown that clung to my waist and flowed like liquid down to the floor. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, secured with diamond pins.
When I walked down the grand staircase of the estate, Julian was waiting at the bottom. He wore a tailored tuxedo that made him look impossibly handsome and lethally sophisticated. For a long moment, he simply stared at me, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made my knees weak.
"You are breathtaking," he said softly, offering his arm.
"I feel like an imposter," I confessed, taking his arm. The fabric of his jacket was cool and smooth under my fingers.
"An imposter hides," Julian whispered into my ear as he led me to the waiting limousine. "A queen owns the room. Remember that tonight, Elena."
The gala was a whirlwind of glitter, expensive champagne, and whispered political deals. Julian kept me at his side every second, his hand resting firmly on the small of my back. He introduced me to senators, judges, and high-ranking police officials as "Miss Novak, a dear friend of the family."
Every eye in the ballroom was on us. Women whispered behind their pearl-handled fans, and men looked at Julian with a mixture of fear and profound respect. For the first time, I saw the true scope of Julian’s power—he didn't just rule the underworld; he held the city's highest society in the palm of his hand.
Around midnight, while Julian was pulled into a private conversation with the Mayor near the balcony, I stepped away to get a glass of water.
"Well, well. Look at the rat in silk."
I turned to see Dante standing behind me, holding a crystal glass of whiskey. His face was flushed, his eyes bloodshot.
"Leave me alone, Dante," I said coldly, turning to walk away.
He grabbed my wrist tightly, leaning in close. "You think you're safe because he sleeps near your room? You think he loves you? Julian doesn't love anything, Elena. He's using you. He needs a soft image to cover up the mess he made at the docks last week. You're just a pretty shield for a monster."
"Let go of her."
The voice was ice cold. Dante froze, turning slowly to face Julian, who had appeared behind us without making a sound.
"Julian," Dante sneered, though his hand trembled as he released my wrist. "Just offering our guest a drink."
"You were told to stay away," Julian said quietly. He didn't make a scene. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply reached into his jacket, pulled out a small black leather notebook, and tossed it onto the glass table between them. "That contains every offshore account you've opened using Syndicate funds over the last three years, Dante. I know about the kickbacks from the Maroni family. I know about the leak."
Dante's face turned deathly pale. "Julian... wait... I can explain—"
"You're stripped of your rank," Julian said calmly. "You have until sunrise to leave the country. If you are ever seen in this state again, my men won't bother bringing you to me. They will bury you where you stand."
Dante looked at me, then at Julian, realization dawning on him that he was completely ruined. Without another word, he turned and fled through the crowd.
Julian turned to me, his expression softening instantly as he looked at my wrist, which had turned slightly red where Dante had grabbed it. He took my hand in his, gently rubbing his thumb over the red mark.
"Did he hurt you?"
"No," I whispered, staring up into his dark, intense eyes. "Julian... is it true? Are you using me?"
May you like
Julian went completely motionless. He looked down at our joined hands, then up into my eyes with an expression of such raw, agonizing honesty that it took my breath away.
"I brought you into my home to save you," Julian said, his voice barely a whisper above the classical music playing across the hall. "I keep you here because I can't bear the thought of waking up in a world where you aren't under my roof. If that is using you, Elena, then I am guilty."
