Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Grant Caldwell

By the third month, Grant’s life had fractured. The court granted Amelia temporary full custody, allowing Grant only supervised visitation twice a week at a neutral family center.

The first time Grant attended a visitation, he didn't know how to hold Owen without Amelia there to guide him. He didn't know what size diapers the boy wore, or how to soothe the specific cry Owen made when he was overtired. The supervisor sat in the corner, taking meticulous notes while Grant sweated through his shirt, feeling utterly helpless.

"He’s hungry," the supervisor remarked dryly after ten minutes of Owen crying.

"I... I have a bottle," Grant said, his hands shaking as he pulled it from the bag Claire had prepared. He tried to feed the baby, but his posture was rigid, his anxiety radiating off him. Owen rejected the bottle, crying harder until the supervisor had to step in.

Grant left the center feeling humiliated. He drove straight to a local bar, sitting alone in the dark corner, staring at the luxury watch on his wrist. It didn't bring him joy anymore. Every tick of the second hand reminded him of the hours he spent drinking bourbon while his wife fought for her life.

Meanwhile, Amelia moved into a sunlit two-bedroom apartment near a beautiful park. With the financial support mandated by the court, she didn't have to rush back to work. She spent her days walking Owen under the shade of willow trees, joining a local mothers' support group, and attending therapy to process the trauma of that night.

She was rediscovering who she was before Grant had slowly, systematically diminished her confidence. She started painting again, setting up an easel by the window while Owen napped. Her skin regained its color, her laughter returned, and her home became a sanctuary of peace, filled with the scent of lavender and baby lotion, entirely devoid of tension.
