Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Watch

The luxury watch box felt heavy in Grant’s hand, a solid weight of gold and leather that anchoring his satisfaction. He had spent the last three days surrounded by high-earning peers at Graypine Ridge Resort, convincing himself that a weekend away was exactly what he deserved for working hard to provide for his family.
But the moment he stepped across the threshold of his Spokane home, the silence hit him. It wasn’t the peaceful quiet of a sleeping household. It was a heavy, suffocating stillness.
"Amelia?" he called out, his voice echoing off the hardwood floors.
No answer. He frowned, setting the black shopping bag on the kitchen island. A half-empty bottle of breast milk sat curdled on the counter. His chest tightened slightly, annoyance warred with a sudden, uncharacteristic spark of dread.
He walked up the stairs, his footsteps unnaturally loud. When he pushed open the nursery door, the air left his lungs.
The cream-colored carpet was stained with a horrific, dark violent crimson. The white bassinet was empty, its sheets tossed aside. On the dresser, dried red finger marks streaked across the pristine white paint. Under the crib lay Amelia’s phone, its screen shattered.
Grant dropped the watch box. It bounced against the floorboards, forgotten.
"Amelia!" he shouted, panic finally piercing through his carefully constructed arrogance. He rushed out of the room, checking their master bedroom, the bathrooms, the guest room. Everything was empty.
He ran back to the nursery, his hands shaking as he retrieved her phone from under the crib. It was dead. He pulled out his own phone, dialing his mother first.
"Grant, dear? Did you have a good—"
"Where is Amelia?" Grant interrupted, his voice cracking. "Mother, where are they? There’s... there’s blood everywhere. The baby is gone."
A sharp intake of breath on the other end. "I... I don't know, Grant. She hasn't called me. I told you she was just overreacting before you left..."
Grant didn't listen to the rest. He hung up and dialed the local hospital. It took twenty grueling minutes of transfers, verification, and frantic demands before a cold, professional voice on the other end confirmed what he feared.
"Amelia Caldwell was admitted through the emergency department three days ago. She underwent emergency surgery for a severe postpartum hemorrhage. Sir, you cannot see her without her permission."

"I'm her husband!" Grant roared into the phone, standing in the middle of the blood-stained nursery.
"She has rescinded your access, Mr. Caldwell," the voice replied calmly. "She is currently under protective privacy."
