Chapter 4 - The Legal Standard

The legal battle began not with a bang, but with a mountain of paperwork. Grant’s initial shock quickly morphed into anger and corporate defensiveness. He hired the most expensive family law attorney in Spokane, determined to prove that Amelia was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and was unfit to care for Owen alone.

Amelia, however, had an irrefutable paper trail.

Sitting in her lawyer's office a month later, Amelia looked at the evidence compiled on the desk. Her attorney, Marcus Vance, a sharp man with a reputation for protecting vulnerable spouses, tapped the documents.

"We have the 911 audio transcript," Marcus explained. "The operator clearly notes your distress, the voice activation records from the smart-home system show you begged for help, and the medical reports explicitly state you suffered a secondary postpartum hemorrhage caused by retained placenta fragments—a purely physical, life-threatening medical emergency."

"And Grant’s defense?" Amelia asked, adjusting the sling holding Owen against her chest. Owen was thriving, gaining weight, his cheeks turning a healthy pink.

"He claims he was unreachable due to poor cell service at the resort," Marcus smiled coldly. "Except we subpoenaed the resort’s Wi-Fi logs. Your husband checked into his corporate email accounts, posted two photos on his public social media, and made three calls to his investment broker during the exact window you were hemorrhaging."

Amelia closed her eyes. It shouldn't have hurt anymore, but the cold calculation of his lies still stung. "He just wants to win. He doesn't want the baby; he wants the control."

"Then we won't let him have it," Marcus said. "We are moving for a temporary restraining order and an exclusive occupancy order for a new apartment financed by your joint accounts. We are also freezing the primary assets before he can hide them."

That evening, Grant sat in his empty house, the stain on the nursery carpet still faintly visible despite professional cleaning. His mother sat across from him, sipping tea.

"She’s ruining your reputation, Grant," his mother hissed. "People at the club are talking. They say you abandoned her."

"I didn't abandon her!" Grant snapped, slamming his fist on the table. But looking around the quiet house, at the empty kitchen where Amelia used to brew her morning coffee, a hollow ache began to settle deep in his bones. For the first time, the luxury around him felt utterly worthless.
