Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Sterile Walls

In the quiet room of the hospital's specialized maternity recovery unit, Amelia held Owen against her chest. The rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound. She was pale, her body still weak from losing nearly half her blood volume, but her eyes were clear.

Beside her sat Claire, her best friend, who had slept in the uncomfortable hospital chair for three days straight.

"He's going to find out eventually, Amelia," Claire said softly, peeling an orange for her. "The hospital security can only keep him at bay in the lobby for so long."

"Let him stay in the lobby," Amelia said, her voice raspy but resolute. "Let him wait. For three days, I lay here wondering if I was going to live to see my son grow up. For three days, he didn't check his phone because he was 'resetting.' He can wait."

A knock on the door interrupted them. A security guard put his head in. "Mrs. Caldwell? Your husband is downstairs. He’s causing a significant scene. The police have been notified to escort him off the premises if he doesn’t calm down, but he is demanding to speak with you."

Amelia looked down at Owen. Her tiny boy yawned, his fist curling against her hospital gown. The memory of the cold nursery floor, the smell of the carpet, and the terror of thinking she would leave her baby motherless flashed through her mind. The old Amelia would have yielded to avoid embarrassment. The new Amelia, forged in the fire of survival, felt nothing but ice.

"Tell him I will see him for exactly five minutes," Amelia said to the guard. "But only if two security officers are present in the room. And Claire, please take Owen to the nursery for a moment. I don't want him near this."

When Grant was finally escorted into the room, he looked unraveled. His hair was messy, his expensive designer shirt wrinkled, and his eyes bloodshot.

"Amelia! Oh my god," he rushed toward the bed, reaching out to grab her hand.

Amelia pulled her hand away, placing it firmly under the blanket. "Don't, Grant."

"Amelia, what happened? I came home and there was... I thought you were dead! Why didn't anyone call me? Why did you block me from the medical updates?" He looked around frantically. "Where is Owen? Where is my son?"

"He is my son," Amelia said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "The son you left behind because your thirty-eighth birthday was more important than a woman who had major abdominal trauma six days prior."

"I didn't know it would be like this!" Grant defended himself, his hands flying up. "My mother said—"

"Your mother didn't marry me, Grant. You did," Amelia interrupted. "You turned off your phone. You ignored my texts. You left me to bleed to death on the floor you chose. If it wasn't for the smart-home monitor you bought to brag to your friends, I would be dead. Owen would be alone."

"Amelia, please, let’s go home. We can hire a nurse, we can fix the carpet—"

"I am never stepping foot in that house again," she said clearly. "You have four minutes left. Use them to understand this: I am filing for legal separation, and I am taking sole custody."
