Chapter 9 - A Mother's Promise

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and deep rose. The ocean waves murmured a steady, soothing rhythm against the shoreline below the cliffside estate.

I walked down from the balcony and stepped out onto the soft grass of the lawn, scooping Clara up into my arms. She squealed with delight, wrapping her chubby little arms tightly around my neck and pressing her cheek against mine.

You're getting so big, my sweet girl, I murmured, burying my face in her soft hair and breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo. You're going to grow up knowing that you can be anything, do anything, and stand up against anyone. Nobody will ever have power over you.

Clara babbled happily, pointing a tiny finger toward the twinkling stars beginning to emerge in the evening sky.

Inside the house, warm lights glowed softly through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The rooms were filled with laughter, security, and peace—everything that my former life had lacked. There was no fear here, no walking on eggshells, no pretending to be someone I wasn't to appease toxic egos and hollow billionaires.

My phone buzzed gently in my pocket. I pulled it out to check a notification from my security detail confirming the perimeter checks were complete and the estate was entirely secure. Everything was locked down tight.

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, tightening my hold on Clara as we walked slowly toward the glowing patio doors.

As I crossed the threshold into our home, closing the glass door behind us against the cool night air, I knew that whatever the future held, we were ready for it. Together.
