Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the Crown

Panic erupted instantly among the guests. High-society socialites scrambled toward the exits, tripping over silver balloons and trampling gift bags in their rush to distance themselves from the Ashford dynasty. Flashbulbs from hidden paparazzi outside the floor-to-ceiling windows began to flare like lightning storms.
Stay where you are! a U.S. Marshal shouted, blocking the main exit as local law enforcement secured the perimeter. Nobody leaves the premises until identification is verified.
Daniel lunged forward, his face contorted in sheer panic. This is a mistake! My wife—look at my wife! She's crazy, she fabricated documents, she’s an unstable—
Agent Miller raised a hand, cutting him off mid-sentence.
Mr. Daniel Ashford, you might want to save your breath for your counsel, though given the breadth of the digital footprint and the cryptographic signatures attached to the evidence files, you'll need more than a good lawyer. You'll need a miracle.
Evidence files? Daniel spun around, grabbing my arm again—harder this time. Mara! What did you do? Tell them! Tell them you're lying! Tell them you made it all up!
Get your hands off her, Agent Miller snapped, and within a fraction of a second, two armed agents were between us, pinning Daniel's arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
The heavy metal clicked shut with a sharp, definitive sound that felt like music to my ears.
Celeste shrieked, backing away until she hit the gift table. Wait! You can't arrest him! I'm carrying his child! I'm part of the family now!
An agent chuckled dryly, slapping cuffs on Victor Ashford as well, while another officer secured Eleanor, who was hissing curses under her breath like an enraged viper.
Unless you're listed as a corporate officer on the offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands, sweet-heart, you might want to rethink your association with the Ashford name, the agent remarked smoothly.
Victor was dragged backward, his eyes locked onto mine with a mixture of hatred and absolute disbelief. How? he snarled through gritted teeth. How did you get into the secure servers? The encryption codes were restricted to board members only!
I tilted my head, stepping closer to him while the federal agents held him secure.
You always underestimated the quiet ones, Victor, I replied softly, my voice carrying only to his ears. You thought because I smiled at your charity galas and played the dutiful housewife that I didn't understand finance? I graduated top of my class with a master's degree in forensic accounting from Wharton before you ever met me, Victor. You handed me your corporate tax returns to organize two years ago to save on accounting fees. You practically handed me the shovel to dig your grave.
Eleanor thrashed against the officer holding her. Witch! Absolute witch! You'll rot in prison for this! You think you've won, but our lawyers will—
Your lawyers are already being detained and questioned for obstruction and asset concealment, Agent Miller interrupted, reading from a tablet handed to her by a junior officer. Every single bank account, trust fund, real estate holding, and luxury asset belonging to Ashford Global and the Ashford family trust has been frozen under federal asset forfeiture laws as of 2:00 p.m. today.
The news hit Victor like a physical blow. His knees buckled slightly, and for a moment, the invincible billionaire looked every bit of his seventy-two years. The empire he had spent four decades building, cheating, and stealing to maintain had evaporated in less than sixty seconds.
And what about me? I asked, rubbing my aching stomach as a sharp contraction rippled through my lower abdomen—stress, adrenaline, and physical trauma taking their toll.
Agent Miller's expression softened instantly. She turned to me, her professional demeanor giving way to genuine concern. Mrs. Ashford—Mara—we have an unmarked medical transport waiting outside with a specialized obstetrics team. The ambulance is cleared to bypass city traffic. You're coming with us to St. Jude’s Memorial, under full federal protection.
Thank you, Agent Miller, I whispered, letting out a long, shaky breath as another wave of pain washed over me. Let's go.

As Daniel, Victor, and Eleanor were marched out through the front doors past a wall of flashing news cameras and screaming reporters, I took one last look around the ruined ballroom. The silver balloons drifted aimlessly against the ceiling. The crushed cupcakes lay scattered across the floor.
My old life was dead and buried. And out of its ashes, my true life was finally beginning.
