Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Five years later, the morning sun poured through the wide arched windows of my downtown corporate headquarters—not Ashford Global, but Nova Foundation & Holdings, a thriving, ethical investment firm dedicated to empowering women, funding sustainable community infrastructure, and supporting maternal healthcare nationwide.
At my desk, framed in sleek brushed silver, sat two photographs. One was a crisp, professional portrait of my executive board—a brilliant team of diverse, fiercely intelligent women and men who shared my vision of ethical commerce and corporate transparency.
The other photograph captured a bright, sunny afternoon at the beach: a five-year-old girl with dark curly hair and a fearless, infectious smile running along the shoreline, her hand clutching a bright red balloon while her mother chased after her, laughing without a single care in the world.
Knock, knock.
The office door pushed open, and Clara poked her head in, wearing a bright yellow dress and carrying a crayon drawing clutched proudly in both hands.
Mommy! Look what I drew at preschool today! she announced, running across the plush rug to lean against my knee.
I scooped her up onto my lap, kissing the top of her head as I examined the colorful masterpiece. It was a picture of a house with a glowing sun, a giant ocean wave, and two stick figures holding hands—one big, one small, both with enormous smiles.
It's beautiful, sweetheart, I smiled, my heart swelling with fierce, unconditional love. What is this?
That's our home, Clara declared proudly, pointing a little finger at the drawing. And that's you and me, protecting each other forever and ever.
Forever and ever, I whispered, wrapping my arms around her and holding her close against my heart.
Far away, behind the gray concrete walls and iron bars of a federal penitentiary, three broken inmates sat in silence, forgotten by society, haunted by the echoes of an empire they had destroyed with their own arrogance. They were nothing more than a cautionary tale whispered in financial boardrooms—a reminder that no matter how powerful someone thinks they are, integrity always outlasts corruption, and justice always finds a way.

But here, in the brilliant warmth of the morning light, wrapped in the arms of my miraculous daughter and surrounded by a life built on courage, truth, and absolute freedom, I knew the truest truth of all.
We hadn't just survived. We had won. And our happily ever after was just beginning.
