Chapter 2 - The Final Countdown

Daniel frowned, his eyebrows drawing together as a flicker of confusion crossed his features. For a fraction of a second, the self-assured smirk wavered on his face.
What is that supposed to mean? he demanded, his hand reaching out to grab my wrist, hauling me upward by force. You're losing your mind, Mara. Always dramatic. Always making a scene. Look at you, ruining our afternoon.
Around us, the guests—mostly high-society acquaintances, sycophants who had spent the last hour kissing up to the Ashford name—were whispering nervously. Some were edging toward the double doors of the ballroom, sensing that the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory to radioactive.
You hit me, I said, my voice steady, carrying clearly over the murmurs of the room. You struck your pregnant wife, Daniel. In front of fifty witnesses.
Daniel scoffed, releasing my arm with a shove that sent me stumbling back against a stack of unopened designer strollers.
Self-defense, he muttered, glancing around at the crowd as if looking for validation. She lunged at Celeste. Everyone saw it. Right, Mother?
Of course, dear, Eleanor Ashford chimed in, stepping forward with her diamond-encrusted rings flashing in the crystal chandelier light. The poor girl was frightened. Mara has always been unstable. We’ve covered for her episodes for years, but this... bringing shame upon the Ashford name at our grandson's welcoming? Unforgivable.
Victor Ashford crossed his arms, his imposing frame casting a long shadow across the parquet floor. His multibillion-dollar real estate and shipping conglomerate, Ashford Global, had weathered financial scandals, political shifts, and economic downturns over three generations. Victor believed his family was untouchable, sitting comfortably above the law, above ethics, and certainly above consequences.
You're done, Mara, Victor said, his voice dropping into that icy register that had broken corporate boardrooms for decades. Pack your things tonight. You'll receive a modest settlement through our legal team, provided you sign a strict non-disclosure agreement. If you breathe a word of this to anyone, we will ensure you never see a single dime, and frankly, you'll be lucky if you keep custody of that child—assuming it's even Daniel's.
Celeste giggled, a high, irritating sound that scraped against my nerves. Such a mess, Danny. Let's go upstairs. I want to see the master bedroom suite before everyone leaves.
Two.
The thought echoed in my mind.
I looked down at my watch again. The second hand ticked past the fifty-eighth mark. Fifty-nine.
Two o'clock.
At that exact second, the heavy oak double doors of the ballroom didn't just open—they slammed backward, crashing against the interior walls with a force that shook the glass windows.
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the room.
Stepping through the threshold wasn't a disgruntled guest or a stray waiter. It was a tactical unit of federal agents in heavy black Kevlar vests, carrying automatic weapons, followed closely by three senior officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Securities and Exchange Commission, flanked by U.S. Marshals.
The lead agent, a tall woman with steel-gray hair and an expression carved from granite, stepped into the center of the room. Her piercing eyes swept over the shattered cupcakes, the terrified guests, and finally landed on Victor Ashford.
Victor Ashford? the agent asked, her voice ringing out crisp and authoritative.
Victor straightened his bespoke Italian suit, his face flushing with arrogant indignation. Who authorized this? Do you know who I am? I demand to speak to the Attorney General immediately. This is private property!
Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division, the woman announced, flashing a leather-bound badge. Victor Ashford, Daniel Ashford, and Eleanor Ashford, you are under arrest for securities fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, and wire fraud conspiracy spanning over a decade, totaling upwards of nine hundred million dollars.
Silence fell over the room—a dead, suffocating silence.
Daniel's jaw dropped. The color completely vanished from his face, leaving him a ghastly, pasty white.
Fraud? Daniel stammered, looking frantically between the federal agents and his father. Dad... what is this? What are they talking about?
Victor didn't answer. He was staring straight at me, his eyes wide with a sudden, dawning terror as the pieces of the puzzle violently snapped together.
He looked at me standing there, eight months pregnant, battered and bruised, yet looking back at him with absolute, unyielding calm.
You, Victor whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in his life.
May you like
I gave him a slow, sweet smile.
Welcome to your new reality, Victor.
