Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Patriarch

With Sienna’s sworn testimony added to the mountain of evidence, the District Attorney’s office expanded the criminal indictment. It was no longer just a case of domestic assault against Adrian; it was now a broader criminal conspiracy involving Victor and Celeste Vale for extortion, witness tampering, and corporate fraud.

The fall of the Vale family was swift and catastrophic.

Without the capital from Ashford Financial, Victor’s personal debts collapsed like a house of cards. Banks foreclosed on their primary residence—the massive, gated estate where my baby shower had been ruined. Their luxury vehicles, art collections, and private accounts were frozen by federal marshals pending the outcome of multiple fraud investigations.

On a chilly Tuesday morning, four weeks after the incident, Harrison entered my hospital suite with a wide smile on his face.

"It's over, Mara," he announced, setting a stack of finalized legal documents on my table. "The court has approved the complete restructuring of Vale Development. The company has been liquidated and its primary real estate assets have been officially merged into Ashford Capital."

"And Victor?" I asked.

"Victor was arrested two hours ago outside his bank," Harrison replied, pulling up a video on his tablet. "He tried to transfer two million dollars from a hidden offshore account in the Cayman Islands. Federal agents intercepted the transfer and charged him with felony wire fraud and money laundering."

I watched the news footage on the screen. Victor Vale, the man who had sat in his velvet chair and claimed I brought 'nothing' into his family, was being led away in handcuffs outside a federal courthouse, his face pale and sunken, his expensive designer coat rumpled and dirty.

Beside him, Celeste was filmed shouting hysterically at reporters as bank officials placed foreclosure padlocks on the iron gates of their mansion.

"They have lost everything," Harrison said quietly. "Their home, their status, their money, and their freedom."

"What about Adrian's trial?" I asked.

"Adrian's defense team collapsed after Sienna's deposition was admitted into evidence," Harrison explained. "Faced with mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines and a guaranteed conviction, Adrian signed a blind plea bargain thirty minutes ago."

"What were the terms?"

"Ten years in state prison without the possibility of parole for five years," Harrison said. "In addition, he signed a full, irrevocable termination of his parental rights toward Clara. He will never be allowed within five hundred yards of you or your daughter for the rest of his life."

I took a deep, clear breath. For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocation feeling in my chest was completely gone.

"And the divorce?"

Harrison handed me a single page with a gold seal attached to the bottom. "The judge signed the final decree this morning. You are legally Mara Ashford again. You owe him nothing, and he has no legal claim to a single penny of your fortune or a single second of your child's life."

I signed my maiden name at the bottom of the document with a steady hand.

Just as I capped the pen, a sharp, sudden sensation radiated across my lower back. I gasped, dropping the pen onto the blanket.

Naomi rushed to my side instantly. "Mara? What is it?"

"My water just broke," I said, smiling through a wave of sudden, powerful pressure. "Call the doctor, Naomi. Clara is ready."
