Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Confrontation

Three days later, the preliminary bail hearing for Adrian Vale took place at the Central District Courthouse. Though my doctors advised me to remain in bed, I insisted on attending via secure video link from my hospital suite, flanked by Harrison and my legal team.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Media outlets from across the nation had cameras pointed at the defense table, where Adrian sat wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed at his waist. Beside him sat Victor and Celeste, both looking gray, exhausted, and stripped of their usual aristocratic luster.

On the prosecution's bench sat State Attorney Elena Vance, a fierce, uncompromising prosecutor who had taken personal interest in the case.

"Your Honor," Elena began, standing before the judge. "The prosecution moves for the defendant, Adrian Vale, to be held without bail pending trial. The defendant committed a violent, premeditated felony assault against his heavily pregnant wife in front of dozens of witnesses. Furthermore, audio and video evidence demonstrates that the defendant threatened further physical violence and attempted to extort legal concessions from the victim while she was injured on the ground."

Adrian’s high-priced defense attorney, Marcus Thorne, immediately stood up. "Your Honor! This is a gross exaggeration of a tragic domestic misunderstanding! Mr. Vale is a prominent businessman, a pillar of the community, and has no prior criminal record. He poses no flight risk and no danger to society. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount."

The judge, a stern woman in her late fifties, looked over her glasses at Thorne. "A misunderstanding, Mr. Thorne? Have you reviewed the clear video footage from the event?"

"The video lacks context, Your Honor," Thorne argued smoothly. "My client was under severe emotional distress. His wife had been secretly manipulating his company's finances behind his back—"

"Objection!" Elena cut in. "Financial management is not a legal defense for punching an eight-month-pregnant woman in the abdomen!"

"Sustained," the judge snapped. "Mr. Thorne, bring your arguments back to the matter of bail."

At that moment, Harrison adjusted the camera angle in my hospital room so that I was clearly visible on the large monitor inside the courtroom. I wore a simple black maternity dress, looking steady, calm, and completely unbothered by their desperate maneuvers.

"Your Honor," Elena continued, gesturing toward the monitor. "The victim, Mara Vale, wishes to submit a sworn statement regarding her safety."

The judge nodded. "Proceed, Mrs. Vale."

I looked directly into the camera lens, meeting Adrian's panicked eyes across the digital feed. "Your Honor, on the afternoon of October 14th, Adrian Vale did not just assault me. He threatened to kill my child if I did not sign away my parental and financial rights. His parents stood by and facilitated this behavior. If he is released on bail, I fear for my life and the life of my unborn daughter."

Adrian suddenly leaped from his chair, his handcuffs rattling loudly. "She’s lying! She set me up! She’s trying to steal my family's company!"

"Order in the court!" the judge shouted, slamming her gavel. "Mr. Vale, sit down and remain silent or I will cite you for contempt!"

Victor tried to pull his son back down, but Adrian was completely unravelling. "You ruined everything, Mara!" he screamed at the screen. "You were supposed to be nothing! You were just a quiet little lawyer!"

"Mr. Vale!" the judge roared. "That is enough! Bail is DENIED. The defendant will remain in custody at the county facility until trial."

The gavel struck the wooden desk with a thunderous bang.

Celeste gasped, burying her face in her gloved hands as court officers led a cursing, struggling Adrian away through the side door. Victor stood frozen, staring at the screen where my image remained calm and unwavering.

As the courtroom began to clear, Harrison stepped close to the camera. "That was brilliant, Mara. Adrian's outburst just sealed his fate with the jury."

"It wasn't brilliant, Harrison," I said softly, touching my stomach as Clara gave a gentle kick. "It was just the truth. Now, let's finish taking apart what's left of his father's company."

That evening, the legal team completed the final paperwork for the corporate takeover. Vale Development was officially dissolved and re-incorporated under the umbrella of Ashford Holdings. By midnight, Victor Vale’s former board of directors had voted unanimously to approve the asset transfer, leaving Victor and Celeste with zero corporate authority and tens of millions of dollars in personal guarantees on defaulted loans.

The high-society family that had treated me like disposable trash was now bankrupt, disgraced, and facing complete social annihilation.
