Chapter 3 - The Falling Empire

By seven o'clock the following morning, the medical monitors in my room had stabilized. My contractions had mercifully ceased, though the doctors insisted on keeping me under strict bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy.

While the hospital room was quiet, the world outside was erupting into absolute chaos.

I sat propped up against soft white pillows, a laptop resting on my lap, watching the morning financial news broadcast. The lead headline across every major network was non-stop coverage of the scandal: VALE DEVELOPMENT FACES LIQUIDITY CRISIS AMID HEINOUS DOMESTIC ABUSE SCANDAL.

"Look at them scramble," Naomi said, walking into my room carrying two large cups of herbal tea. She set one on my nightstand and sat in the chair beside my bed. "The Vale estate has been surrounded by press since dawn. Victor tried to hold an emergency press conference at eight to claim the video was manipulated by 'disgruntled contractors,' but the police department released the bodycam footage from the arresting officers half an hour ago."

"Did they arrest him?" I asked, sipping the warm tea.

"Not Victor, but Adrian was taken into custody at six this morning at his private penthouse," Naomi revealed with a satisfied smirk. "Charged with felony domestic battery, assault on a pregnant person, and reckless endangerment. His bail hearing is scheduled for two o'clock this afternoon."

I looked down at my phone as it began to vibrate uncontrollably. The caller ID displayed Victor Vale. I let it ring until it went to voicemail, then watched as a second call immediately came in from Celeste Vale. I declined it without a second thought.

Seconds later, my phone chimed with a text message from Victor:

Mara, this has gone far enough. Call off your financial dogs immediately. We can discuss a civilized settlement. You are destroying this family's legacy.

I typed back a single sentence:

You destroyed your legacy the moment you applauded my pain.

I hit send and immediately blocked both of their numbers.

At ten o'clock, Harrison entered the room accompanied by two junior associates carrying thick stacks of legal folders. "The foreclosure proceedings on the Vale Tower have commenced," Harrison reported, placing the folders on the table. "Victor called an emergency meeting of his board of directors thirty minutes ago. He tried to sell off their hospitality division to raise quick capital, but no buyer will touch them while the foreclosure notice is pending."

"What about Sienna?" I asked.

Naomi pulled up a security log on her phone. "Our investigators tracked her. The moment Adrian was put in handcuffs this morning, Sienna packed three suitcases and tried to leave his apartment. Victor’s private security stopped her at the gate. It seems they're holding her at the family estate to ensure she doesn't run."

"She’s twenty-two and terrified," I said, feeling a strange mixture of pity and resolve. "She thought she was buying a ticket into old-money royalty. She has no idea she just tied herself to a sinking ship."

"Are you going to offer her an exit?" Naomi asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Only if she tells the complete truth," I replied. "Sienna was at that party to humiliate me. But she was also manipulated by Adrian. He used her just like he tried to use me."

Before Naomi could respond, the door to my hospital room opened abruptly. Two armed hospital security guards stepped in, followed by a frantic-looking man in a wrinkled tailored suit. It was Julian Vance, Victor’s chief legal counsel and Harrison’s distant cousin.

"Harrison! Mara!" Julian gasped, his tie slightly askew as he held up his hands to appease the security guards. "Please, I need five minutes. The Vales are losing everything. The stock has dropped forty percent in two hours. Trading has been halted twice!"

Harrison stepped forward, towering over his cousin. "You are entering a private medical room without authorization, Julian. Leave before I have security remove you physically."

"Mara, please," Julian begged, looking directly at me. "Victor is willing to grant you a full, uncontested divorce. He will pay you five million dollars in cash right now if you sign an NDA and instruct the Ashford Trust to grant a ninety-day extension on the debt repayment."

I laughed—a cold, sharp sound that startled even the guards. "Five million dollars? Julian, do you know how much money the Ashford Trust controls?"

Julian hesitated, swallowing hard. "I... I know you have significant backing, but—"

"The Ashford Trust holds four hundred million dollars in liquid assets," I said, leaning forward, my eyes locking onto his. "I don't need Victor's five million. I own eighty percent of his corporate debt. I am not looking for a settlement, Julian. I am taking his company."

Julian turned pale. "You... you're the controlling beneficiary of Ashford?"

"Tell Victor that his ten-o'clock board meeting is canceled," I continued coldly. "Because as of five minutes ago, Ashford Financial executed its right to vote its debt shares. I am now the majority stakeholder of Vale Development. And my first act as owner is to terminate Victor Vale as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately."

Julian stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat. "You... you can't do that."

"I just did," I replied. "Now get out of my room before I press charges against you for corporate harassment."
