Chapter 2 - The Silent Retaliation

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom finally burst open, not by Adrian’s security detail, but by a team of paramedics dressed in dark navy uniforms, accompanied by three armed city police officers. The air in the room instantly shifted from suffocating arrogance to sharp, metallic panic.
"Who called them?" Celeste demanded, her voice cracking through her polished aristocratic demeanor. "Who dared bring police into my home? Turn those cameras off this instant!"
Naomi stood tall near the entrance, her phone resting discreetly in her pocket. "I called them, Celeste. And the emergency dispatcher listened to every single word Adrian said while your daughter-in-law lay bleeding on your Italian marble."
Adrian’s face darkened, his jaw clenching as he took a step toward Naomi. "You're trespassing, Naomi. Get out of my house before I have you thrown—"
"Mr. Vale, step back," the lead officer commanded, placing a hand firm on his holster. "Ma'am, don't move," he said, kneeling beside me.
I kept my hand pressed against my stomach, feeling the erratic, terrified beats of my unborn daughter's movements. "I was assaulted," I whispered clearly, ensuring the officer's chest camera picked up every syllable. "My husband, Adrian Vale, struck me in the stomach and pushed me into the furniture. My contractions are starting."
Sienna shrank back behind Victor, suddenly looking far younger and far less confident than she had moments ago in her shimmering red dress. The glitter on her collarbone caught the harsh light of the paramedic's flashlight as they began assessing my vitals.
"This is a private family dispute!" Victor bellowed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Do you know who I am? I own Vale Development! I fund your department's charitable galas!"
"You used to," I said quietly, looking directly into Victor's cold, calculating eyes as the paramedics carefully lifted me onto a stretcher. "You really should check your board's financial disclosures before you speak to law enforcement, Victor."
Celeste stepped forward, her diamond bracelets clinking like tiny chains. "What is that supposed to mean, you ungrateful little parasite?"
I didn't answer her. Instead, I turned my head toward Naomi. "Execute Protocol Alpha," I told her softly. "Call Harrison. Tell him the forbearance period for Vale Development ends effective immediately. Default notices are to be served by midnight."
Adrian scoffed, though a seed of doubt flickered in his brown eyes. "Protocol what? You're a low-tier contract lawyer, Mara. You don't have the power to default a library book, let alone my family's corporation."
"We'll see," I murmured as the paramedics began wheeling my stretcher out of the ballroom. As the double doors opened to the crisp autumn air outside, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the pristine driveway of the Vale estate. Dozens of reporters, tipped off by Naomi's team, were already gathering at the iron gates, their lenses flashing in rapid succession.
The ride to St. Jude’s Hospital was a blur of fluorescent lights, oxygen masks, and the terrifying, rhythmic beep of the fetal heart monitor. Every beep felt like a countdown.
"Heart rate is elevated, but stable," the paramedic declared, monitoring the screen. "You're having stress-induced contractions, Mrs. Vale. We need to stop labor if we can, but if the placenta has abraded, we'll have to deliver tonight."
"Her name is Clara," I whispered, tears finally overflowing and tracing cool lines down my temples. "Save her. Do whatever it takes. I don't care about me."
"We'll protect you both," the doctor said as the ambulance doors flew open at the trauma bay.
Within thirty minutes, I was transferred to a high-risk delivery suite. Harrison Vance, the senior managing director of the Ashford Family Trust and my late father’s most trusted legal counsel, was already waiting in the hallway. Dressed in a sharp grey suit, his face was set in iron lines.
"Mara," Harrison said, stepping into the room the moment the nurses finished attaching my IVs. "I saw the initial video feed Naomi transmitted. It is horrifying. Are you and the child safe?"
"Clara is fighting," I said, holding a hand over my abdomen. "The doctors gave me medication to slow the contractions. We have a window of time. Did you execute the papers?"
Harrison pulled a leather binder from his briefcase and opened it on my bedside table. "The moment you gave the word. Ashford Financial has officially revoked the thirty-million-dollar emergency liquidity line that was keeping Vale Development afloat. We have also called in the fifty-million-dollar mezzanine loan secured by their flagship commercial properties."
A grim smile touched my lips. "And the board?"
"Notice of foreclosure has been served to Victor Vale’s personal council," Harrison replied smoothly. "By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, when the New York Stock Exchange opens, Vale Development will be in technical default. The share price will plummet before the opening bell even rings."
"Good," I said, my voice hardening. "They built their fortune on the illusion of stability. Let them see what happens when the foundation is pulled away."
"There is more," Harrison added, handing me a tablet displaying live social media metrics. "The video of Adrian striking you and his parents celebrating has gone viral. Naomi’s PR firm ensured it hit every major news outlet simultaneously. Public outrage is absolute. Corporate sponsors are already dropping their partnerships with Vale Development."

I looked at the video playing on the screen. There was Adrian, arrogant and sneering, claiming Sienna’s unborn child as the 'real heir' while I lay bruised on the floor.
"They wanted a public scandal," I said softly, handing the tablet back. "I'm going to give them an economic annihilation."
