Chapter 9 - The Legal Reckoning

The scandal shook the medical and corporate worlds to their foundations. The confession of Liam Vance exposed a deep web of corruption within the regional organ transplant network. Two high-ranking administrators at Mercy General were arrested, and Liam was sentenced to seven years in a federal penitentiary for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and medical endangerment.

Khloe was moved to a world-class Stirling medical facility. Stripped of Liam’s toxic presence and given the proper, ethical medical care funded by my foundation, her body began to accept the transplant.

I visited her once, the day before she was discharged. She sat by the window, pale but breathing easily, the stolen heart beating stably within her. When I walked into the room, she flinched, but I merely sat in the chair across from her.

"Why did you save me?" Khloe whispered, her voice trembling. "After what Liam did to you... why?"

"Because unlike Liam, I value human life," I said softly, looking at the silver scar on my own chest, hidden beneath a beautiful silk blouse. "And because I wanted you to live a long, full life knowing exactly what it cost. Every time you feel that heart beat, Khloe, remember that it belongs to a dead girl whose husband abandoned her. Live your life well. Do something meaningful with it. Do not let my sacrifice be for nothing."

Khloe burst into tears, bowing her head in deep, genuine repentance. For the first time, she wasn't the glamorous mistress or the fragile victim. She was just a girl grateful to be alive, carrying a debt she could never repay. I stood up, walked out of the room, and closed the door on that chapter of my life forever.
