Chapter 3 - Rebirth in the Shadows

The recovery was a grueling journey through purgatory. When I woke up, the suffocating weight in my chest was gone, replaced by the deep, rhythmic, powerful thumping of a healthy, athletic heart. I was no longer at Mercy General. I was in a state-of-the-art private medical wing inside the Stirling Manor, a sprawling estate nestled in the cliffs overlooking the ocean.
For the first six months, Beatrice was a merciless taskmaster. She didn't just oversee my physical rehabilitation; she tore down my old, submissive personality and rebuilt me from the ground up.
"A Stirling does not cry over a man who treats her like an option," Beatrice lectured, throwing a thick binder of financial documents onto my lap as I sat in a wheelchair. "Liam Vance used your family's small business to prop up his own company, Vance Enterprises. He married you for your father's supply chain connections, and the moment your father passed and you fell ill, you became an inconvenience."
"I loved him," I murmured, staring at the financial graphs.
"And love without power is a liability," Beatrice snapped gently, lifting my chin with her cane. "Look at the news."
She turned on the television. The entertainment news anchor was smiling brightly. “A beautiful day for a high-society wedding! Real estate mogul Liam Vance has tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Khloe Montgomery, just six months after the tragic passing of his first wife, Clara. Sources say Khloe is recovering beautifully from her recent heart transplant, a miracle Liam attributes to destiny.”
The screen showed Liam, looking dashing in a tailored tuxedo, kissing Khloe on the steps of a cathedral. Khloe was radiant, her hand resting over her chest—over my stolen heart. Liam’s face held a look of profound peace, a look he had never once given me during our three years of marriage.
A cold, diamond-hard resolve settled deep within my new chest. My healthy heart beat with a steady, furious rhythm.

"They think I am a ghost, Beatrice," I said, my voice dropping an octave, losing its soft, hesitant edge.
"Then it is time to prepare the haunting," Beatrice replied, her eyes gleaming with pride. "For the next year, you will learn the mechanics of global finance, corporate warfare, and psychological manipulation. When you step back into the light, you will not be the dying girl they abandoned. You will be the woman who holds their entire world in the palm of her hand."
