Chapter 4 - The Vanguard Acquisition

A year later, the corporate world was rocked by the sudden appearance of Vanguard Holdings, a massive, aggressive investment fund backed by the Stirling fortune. I was appointed as the sole CEO and chairperson, operating under my new legal identity: Clara Stirling.

I discarded my old wardrobe of soft pastel dresses and oversized sweaters meant to hide my sick, frail body. Now, I wore bespoke, razor-sharp power suits, my hair cut into a sleek, sophisticated bob, and my eyes shielded by dark, enigmatic confidence. I had spent twelve hours a day studying Liam's company. I knew Vance Enterprises better than he did.

Liam had been aggressive expanding into international shipping, leveraging the logistics network he had inherited from my late father. However, he had overleveraged his assets, taking massive loans from a consortium of banks to fund Khloe’s extravagant lifestyle and high-society ambitions.

"Liam has just bid on the New York Port expansion project," my personal secretary, Edward, informed me during a morning briefing. "It is a make-or-break deal for Vance Enterprises. If they lose it, their stock will plummet, and their creditors will panic."

"Who is their main competitor?" I asked, sipping my black coffee.

"A subsidiary of Stirling Global. We control the bidding board."

I leaned back in my leather chair, a cold smile touching my lips. "Deny their bid. Double our own, and buy out the primary bank holding Liam’s corporate debt. I want Vanguard Holdings to become the sole creditor of Vance Enterprises by the end of the week."

"And what about the public gala this weekend, Miss Stirling?" Edward asked, a knowing smile on his face. "The Vance family has purchased a table to appeal to the Stirling foundation for funding."

"Confirm our attendance," I replied smoothly. "It’s time for a family reunion."
