Chapter 2 - The Matriarch's Covenant

The high-pitched wail of the cardiac monitor began to recede, replaced not by the silence of death, but by a sudden, unnatural stillness that seemed to freeze the very air in the hospital room. Dr. Evans and the frantic nurses felt like distant, blurry ghosts moving in slow motion.
"Open your eyes, child. We have work to do."
I forced my heavy eyelids apart. The frail, silent figure who had occupied the bed next to mine for the last two weeks was sitting upright. Madam Beatrice Stirling—a woman the hospital staff whispered about in hushed, terrified tones, calling her an eccentric recluse whose family had abandoned her—did not look frail anymore. Her piercing silver eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that burned through my lethargy.
"They think I am dying," Beatrice said, a sharp, aristocratic smirk playing on her pale lips. "They think my family has forgotten me. The truth is, I am testing them. And they have failed miserably, just as your husband has failed you."
"I... I am dying," I rasped, the taste of iron coating my tongue.
"Only if you choose to let that spineless boy dictate your expiration date," Beatrice countered, swinging her legs over the side of the bed with surprising agility. She stood up, smoothing down her hospital gown as if it were a royal robe. "My wealth can buy nations, Clara. It can certainly buy a heart. Within three hours, a private medical jet can have a perfectly matched, legally acquired donor organ landing on the roof of this hospital. But my gifts are never free."
I stared at her, my gasping breaths rattling in my chest. "What... do you want?"
"An heir," she said simply. "My biological children and grandchildren are vultures. They are currently dividing my empire in their minds, waiting for my corpse to cool. I want someone with a pure soul, someone who knows the agony of betrayal, to inherit the Stirling global empire. I want someone who will use my legacy to grind those who wronged her into dust. Sign my adoption and inheritance papers, Clara. Give up the name Vance. Become a Stirling, and I will give you a second chance at life."
Dr. Evans suddenly broke through the haze, rushing toward me with the defibrillator paddles. "Clara! Stay with us!"
I looked past the doctor, straight into Beatrice’s silver eyes. The image of Liam’s cold, dismissive face flashed in my mind. “Don't be dramatic... Khloe is terrified.” He had sentenced me to death for the sake of his first love's comfort. He expected me to quietly fade away.
"I accept," I whispered, the words scraping against my throat. "I will be your heir."

Beatrice smiled, a terrifying, beautiful sight. She reached into her bedside drawer, pulled out a satellite phone, and pressed a speed dial. "Edward. Activate Project Phoenix. The new matriarch has accepted. Secure the heart, prep the private surgical team, and initiate the media blackout. Clara Vance is dead. Clara Stirling is born."
Within thirty minutes, the hospital room was overridden by a tactical medical team bearing the Stirling crest. Dr. Evans was pushed aside, handed a non-disclosure agreement backed by billions, and instructed to log a temporary clinical death in my records to throw Liam off the scent. As the anesthesia finally took hold of me, I didn't feel fear. I felt a cold, burning desire to survive.
