Chapter 8 - The Collapse of a FacadeBack in Scottsdale, Ryan’s life was an absolute wasteland of his own making.

The luxury cabin trip in Sedona was now a punchline among his former friends. Marcus and the rest of the guys had immediately cut ties with him the moment the local news picked up the story: "Local Executive Flee Family Medical Emergency for Birthday Weekend." Social media had torn him apart, dragging his name through the mud with thousands of comments condemning his callous narcissism.

Worse still, his employer—a prestigious tech firm—terminated his contract immediately following the police report. Corporate ethics committees did not look kindly on men who abandoned dying wives for ATV trips.

Sitting alone in our empty, half-packed house—since the court had ordered him to vacate the premises pending the divorce settlement—Ryan stared at a cold cup of coffee on the kitchen counter. His mother refused to take his calls, utterly ashamed of the monster she had raised.

He finally understood what he had lost. He had traded a loving wife, a miraculous newborn son, and a peaceful, beautiful family for a weekend of whiskey, cigars, and toxic pride. He was completely, utterly alone, facing a future of financial ruin and social ostracization.
