Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two weeks later, the morning sun poured through the wide windows of my sister’s peaceful suburban home in Phoenix, where Ethan and I were currently staying.
I sat propped up in a comfortable armchair, holding my sweet baby boy against my chest. Ethan cooed softly, his tiny fingers wrapping around my thumb with a fierce, unbreakable grip. My body still ached occasionally, a physical reminder of the trauma I had endured, but every breath I took felt lighter, cleaner, and entirely my own.
My phone chimed on the side table. It wasn't Ryan—he was barred from contacting me by court order. Instead, it was an email notification from my powerhouse divorce attorney, Sarah Vance.
The message read: "Claire, the preliminary filings are complete. We are going for full legal and physical custody, the marital home, and complete financial support. Ryan’s employer has already placed him on indefinite administrative suspension pending the police investigation into domestic neglect. You hold all the cards."
I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.
Gone was the woman who pleaded for scraps of attention from a man who viewed her as an inconvenience. In her place stood a mother who had looked death in the eye and walked away victorious. My sister walked into the room carrying a steaming mug of chamomile tea, smiling warmly as she stroked Ethan’s soft hair.

"You look stronger every day, Claire," my sister said softly.
"I am," I replied, looking down at my son. "I really am."
