Chapter 5 - The Empty Sanctuary

Sunday afternoon rolled in with a blazing Arizona sun beating down on the quiet suburban streets of Scottsdale.

Ryan’s silver SUV pulled into the driveway of our home around 2:00 PM. He stepped out, feeling refreshed, smelling faintly of campfire smoke and expensive cologne, and carrying a cooler filled with leftover steaks. The weekend had been an absolute success—no nagging, no crying babies, just pure, uninterrupted male bonding.

He strode up the front porch, whistling a jaunty tune, and pushed open the front door.

"Honey, I'm home!" he called out, expecting a sulking wife or perhaps his mother giving him a disapproving glare.

Instead, the house was dead silent.

Ryan frowned, dropping his keys on the entry table. "Claire?"

He walked into the living room. Immaculate. He walked into the kitchen. Clean, except for a shattered glass swept neatly into a dustpan by the sink. Then, he walked down the hallway toward the nursery.

The door was wide open.

Ryan stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat.

The soft cream-colored rug was gone. In its place, a large, stark patch of bare hardwood gleamed under the sunlight, surrounded by industrial cleaning supplies and caution tape. The crib was empty. Ethan’s clothes, his mobile, his changing mat—everything was gone.

A cold wave of panic crashed over Ryan.

"Claire?!" he shouted, his voice cracking.

He ran back to the living room, grabbing his phone from the table. With trembling fingers, he flicked off airplane mode.

Instantly, his phone erupted.

The screen froze for five seconds as a barrage of notifications flooded in—buzzing incessantly, text after text, voicemail after voicemail, flashing red icons.

He stared at the screen in sheer disbelief.

Ryan’s face drained of all color. The phone slipped from his fingers, crashing hard onto the hardwood floor, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of cracks.
