Chapter 8 - The Reclaiming

With Ethan behind bars awaiting trial, the focus shifted entirely to cleaning up the remnants of his toxicity. The next target was Beatrice, who was still occupying her luxury apartment, entirely unaware that the financial lifeline keeping her there had been permanently severed.

Two days after Ethan’s arrest, Arthur and I, accompanied by a legal process server, arrived at Beatrice’s apartment. When she opened the door, she was wearing a silk robe, holding a cup of expensive tea, looking as haughty as ever.

"You again?" she hissed, trying to slam the door.

The process server quickly wedged his foot in the frame, handing her a stack of legal papers. "Beatrice Vance, you are being served with an immediate eviction notice for non-payment of rent, as the corporate account funding this apartment has been frozen due to criminal investigation. Furthermore, you are being sued by the Sterling Family Trust for the recovery of three hundred thousand dollars in stolen funds used to pay your personal debts."

Beatrice’s tea cup shattered on the tiled floor—a poetic echo of the plate Maya had dropped two nights before. "What?! You can't sue me! I didn't steal anything! My son gave me that money!"

"Your son stole that money from my daughter, Beatrice," I said, stepping forward, looking at her with cold satisfaction. "And since it was used to pay off your illegal gambling debts, the court will be seizing your assets, your jewelry, and your expensive furniture to repay the debt. You have forty-eight hours to vacate this property before the sheriff returns to throw you out on the street."

"You are monsters!" she screamed, her voice cracking as tears of pure selfishness rolled down her face. "Where am I supposed to live? I am a woman of high society!"

"Not anymore," I said calmly. "Perhaps you can find a nice, cold kitchen to work in. I hear it builds character."

While Beatrice’s world collapsed, Maya began the beautiful process of reclaiming her life. We returned to the Elm Street estate, not to live there, but to pack up her true belongings—her books, her art supplies, and the beautiful memories she had before Ethan entered her life.

We hired a team to clean the house from top to bottom, stripping away every trace of the man who had tried to dim her light. Maya decided to put the house on the market, choosing to use the funds to start completely fresh somewhere new.

As we packed the final boxes, Maya found her old sketchbook hidden at the bottom of a closet, covered in dust. Ethan had told her she had no talent and that her art was a waste of time. She opened it to a page featuring a beautiful, vibrant drawing of a butterfly taking flight.

She smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. "I think I’m going to start painting again, Mom."

"I think that’s the best idea you’ve ever had, sweetheart," I replied, hugging her tightly.
