Chapter 5 - The True Colors

The immediate aftermath of the eviction brought a strange, heavy quiet to the house. Arthur and Deputy Miller remained in the living room, securing the perimeter and ensuring that a locksmith—already contacted by Arthur—would arrive within the hour to change every lock on the estate.
I led Maya into the master bathroom, turning on the water to a gentle, soothing warmth. I didn't let her plunge her freezing hands into hot water immediately; I knew the sudden temperature shift would cause intense pain. Instead, I used a soft towel soaked in lukewarm water to slowly bring the circulation back to her skin.
"Mom," she whispered, her eyes staring blankly at the marble sink. "I felt so small. Every day, he made me feel like I was lucky just to breathe the same air as him. He told me that if I left, everyone would know I failed as a wife."
"He is a master manipulator, Maya," I said softly, gently drying her hands. "Men like Ethan look for beautiful, kind souls because they have none of their own. They try to hollow you out so they can fill the empty space with their own bloated ego. You didn't fail. You survived."
As the circulation returned, the dark bruise on her wrist became painfully obvious. It was the distinct shape of a tight, aggressive grip. My heart burned with rage, but I kept my composure for her sake. "Did he do this tonight, sweetheart?"
Maya nodded slowly. "Yesterday. I forgot to polish his dress shoes before his meeting. He grabbed me... he said he was just trying to get my attention. But it hurt, Mom. It always hurt."
"We are going to the clinic tonight," I said firmly. "We will document everything. Every mark, every bruise, every medical reality. Arthur will use it to file a restraining order first thing in the morning."
An hour later, after the locks were changed and the house was fully secured, I drove Maya to a private medical facility owned by a trusted family physician. The documentation process was thorough, painful, but absolutely necessary. We collected the physical evidence of Ethan's cruelty, transforming her silent suffering into undeniable legal weapons.

Meanwhile, Ethan’s world was already starting to unravel outside. Unable to access the Sterling funds, his credit cards—which were supplementary cards tied to Maya’s account—were systematically declined when he tried to book a room at a nearby luxury hotel.
From the passenger seat of my car, I watched the notifications flash on my phone as I systematically froze every single account associated with the Sterling Trust. Every automated text message was a nail in the coffin of Ethan's financial existence. He had spent years pretending to be a wealthy prince; by midnight, he was discovering exactly what it felt like to be completely broke in a world that only cares about money.
