Chapter 3 - The Exposure

Beatrice stood up, her expensive jewelry clinking loudly in the quiet room. Her initial shock had quickly morphed into defensive arrogance. "This is outrageous! Even if what you say about the house is true, Eleanor, a marriage is a sacred bond. My son is a brilliant financial analyst. He provides the social status your daughter clearly lacks the grace to maintain. Look at her! She can't even hold a plate properly. Ethan deserves a wife who supports him, not a mother-in-law who meddles in domestic affairs."
"Domestic affairs?" I turned my gaze to Beatrice, letting the full weight of my contempt show on my face. "You sit there, eating food my daughter prepared, watching her freeze in her own home, and you call it domestic affairs? You are a parasite feeding off the labor of a girl who was taught to respect her elders, even when those elders are utterly devoid of human decency."
"Don't you talk to my mother like that!" Ethan yelled, stepping in front of Beatrice as if protecting her. The cowardice was transparent. He was terrified because the illusion of his grand life was shattering into pieces right in front of the mother he had lied to for years.
Just then, the heavy oak front door rattled, followed by the sharp, authoritative sound of a firm knock.
Ethan froze. Beatrice looked toward the hallway, a sudden look of dread crossing her features.
I didn't wait for Ethan to move. I walked past him, keeping my arm firmly around Maya’s shoulders, guiding her away from the kitchen and toward the foyer. When I opened the door, Arthur Vance stood on the porch, flanked by a tall, uniform-clad sheriff’s deputy. Arthur held a thick manila folder in his gloved hand.
"Eleanor," Arthur said, tipping his hat slightly before stepping into the warm air of the foyer. His sharp eyes immediately took in the scene: Maya’s wet, shivering frame, the broken china visible in the kitchen, and Ethan standing defensively in the dining room. "Deputy Miller is here to ensure the peace is kept while we execute the immediate termination of the occupancy permit."
"What is the meaning of this?!" Ethan stormed into the hallway, trying to look imposing, but the sight of the deputy's badge made him visibly shrink. "You can't just burst into my home with the police! There are tenant laws! You have to give thirty days' notice!"
Arthur opened the folder, pulling out a document stamped with a silver corporate seal. "Mr. Vance, I am the sole owner of this property. The lease agreement you signed was an occupancy-at-will contract, contingent upon the primary residency of Maya Sterling-Vance. The contract explicitly states that if the primary tenant, Maya, requests the termination of the arrangement, or if the co-signer, Eleanor Sterling, withdraws financial backing due to property damage or neglect, the residency is terminated immediately without the requirement of a prior notice period."
Arthur looked past Ethan to Maya. "Maya, my dear, do you wish to remain in this house tonight with this man?"
Maya looked at Ethan. He was glaring at her, his eyes burning with a silent, threatening command to say no, to play the submissive wife one more time. He even managed to soften his voice slightly, adopting a manipulative, pleading tone. "Maya... think about what you're doing. We're a family. Don't let your mother ruin our marriage over a misunderstanding."

For a long moment, the only sound was the howling winter wind outside. Maya looked at her blue, wrinkled fingers. She looked at the dark mark on her wrist. Then, she looked up at the deputy, her jaw tightening.
"No," Maya said, her voice shaking but clear. "I want them out. I want them both out of my house. Out of my life."
